OPTION SYNOPSIS CENTRAL RIFT BASIN OPTION SYNOPSIS CENTRAL RIFT BASIN

Launch your drive to the Central Rift Basin at the Indian Ocean coastal white sands beach in Dar es Salaam where very young sediments (Holocene age) are being deposited. Criss- cross and ascend the undulating hills while driving southwesterly along the Morogoro Road to encounter aging-up CENTRAL RIFT BASIN OPTION rocks of Holocene – Tertiary age; Cretaceous sandstones at Pera in Chalinze onto Jurassic calcareous sandstones and limestones at Msolwa and Kidugalo before stumbling upon Precambrian Metamorphic Basement rocks on the way to Morogoro and Mikumi.

The Uluguru Mountains is outstanding scenery that leaves a mark in any one’s recollections. The Karoo rocks along the Kilombero railway cut and the Ruaha/Iyovya River confluence cutting through Usagaran metamorphic basement rocks are a never miss opportunity that any geoscientist would be pleased to be part of. The expedition game-drives into the Mikumi National Park while observing alternating Karoo shales and sandstones being trodden by wild animals. The last day is spent driving east and then south to the Wingayongo bitumen oil seep where a prolific petroleum system is actualized.
