Presented by: Title: Date: DRM NISO Meeting, Denver Geoffrey Adams Dir. IT Solutions May 18 th, 2005

First a Reality Check! …. And, no, I dont parse XML in my sleep! Guiding Principle

Scholarly Communication, Anno 1637 Print publication by the brothers Elsevier, Leyden, The Netherlands, over 350 years ago Still available in the Leyden University Library For 500 Years Publishers Have Dealt With This……….

Rights Management Issues, Anno 1637 Assuming of course, you know how to read! If You Have A Copy You Can Read It!……….

13 Mainframe Computers Rows Of Servers Scholarly Communication, Anno Terabytes of Data Storage 1.2 Petabytes of Tape Storage 90 Terabytes of Data Storage 1.2 Petabytes of Tape Storage

Rights Management Issues, Anno 2005 Are You Who You Say You Are? Do You Have Any Right At All To Access A Particular Item? What Can You Do With It – (Besides Read It)? And ….. Which Version Do You Want? What Level Of Granularity Do You Want? What Level Of Resolution Do You Want? What Format Do You Want It In?

The Future Is Going To Be Much More Complex Than The Past Or Present… Text/Articles Including Supplements To These Such As Word/Excel/Raw Data Etc. Time Based Media – Audio/Video To Supplement/Explain Other Items Raw Data Itself – Possibly Federated Databases Will The Major Consumer Of The Future Be Human? High Quality XML Based Content Repositories Open The Door For Things We Hadnt Dreamed Of In The Past Interoperability Across Multiple Technology Environments And Delivery To Multiple Devices Will Be Critical Stakeholders Come In Many Shapes And Sizes….. And One Size Will Not Necessarily Fit All! Scholarly Communication, Anno 2010 ?

Another Reality Check! BUT…………. The Rate Of Change Of Technology And The Demands Of Scientists Continues To Increase We Invested An Average $80M Per Year In IT Since 2000, This Will Need To Increase If We Are To Keep Up With Our Customers Needs We Must Have Effective Rights Protection Mechanisms In Place If We Are To Continue To Invest At This Level

The Needs Forget The Present Needs, Its Already Too Late! Unque Identifiers ( E.G. DOI) Commonly Understood Semantics Rights Expression Languages Ease Of Use, Will Technology Be An Enabler Or An Inhibitor? ……………… and dont overlook the need to educate!

…….More Needs Security Features & Copyright Protection/Technologies Personalization Granularity Interoperability Payment Systems

A Wild Card? Federated Solutions A Still Evolving Situation DRM Is Only Half The Picture Inheriting Rights From Multiple Sources

Some Other Considerations We May Well Need Data Standards But…. What About Other Standards Or Reference Models? What About Architectures? What About Minimal Functionality? Potential For New Business Models Portal To A Network Of Repositories What We Publish Is Not Necessarily All That We Have!

In Conclusion….. Its not going to be easy but……… The benefits of success are enormous for everyone and the costs of failure are dire ……………………..so lets get on with it!
