Instructional and Support Practices: Correlation with Achievement and Placement? We have discussed the purposes of evaluation: 1)Effectiveness 2)Determine Implementation 3)Identify Strengths and Weaknesses 4)Provide Recommendations We can start a discussion of the strength of the relationship between our practices and results by using correlation. We will compute the relationship between variables at a project and determine the relationships. As a group, we’ll determine our “next steps,” or questions moving forward. 5

Instructional and Support Practices: Correlation with Achievement and Placement? The basics… Something that can tell you the “strength of the relationship” Can range from -1.0 (negative) to +1.0 (positive) Two independent data sets Can include ordinal, interval, ratio data No causality! 6

Instructional and Support Practices: Correlation with Achievement and Placement? Each group will enter (x,y) data and answer the three questions. Each group will discuss the results. Each group will suggest “next steps” for this project. coefficient/ numerics.net/Samples/BivariateSampleCalculator.aspx 7

Instructional and Support Practices: Correlation with Achievement and Placement? Let’s report what we found… 8
