Characteristics of Good Teachers Resource: Becoming a Teacher in a Field-Based Setting

1. Commitment to Students & Their Learning Good teachers:  Believe all children can learn  Know about student development  Know about learning processes  Recognize, accept, and rejoice in student differences  Try to meet the learning needs of all students  Provide opportunities for all to receive attention

2. Knowledge of Subjects & How to Convey Content to Students Good Teachers:  Are enthusiastic about the subject matter  Understand how to relate or connect the content  Know how to convey the subject matter to students  Have large repertoires of curriculum resources  Know there are multiple paths to knowledge

3 Types of Content Knowledge Content KnowledgeDefinition Subject Matter Knowledge A deep understanding of the content Curriculum Knowledge Knowing what is to be taught, what materials to use, & what students already know Pedagogical Knowledge Teaching strategies; how subject matter is presented to students

3. Ability to Manage & Monitor Student Learning Good Teachers:  Have appropriately high expectations for all students  See themselves as facilitators for learning  Use a wide range of methods to reach all learners  Regularly assess the learning process to be sure objectives are being met

4. Ability to Think About Teaching & Learn from Experiences Good Teachers:  Constantly improve their practices  Understand the decisions and actions that occur in the classroom  Learn from their experiences and sometimes seek help or advice from others  Draw upon educational research  Model an educated person and lifelong learner

5. Participation in Learning Communities Good Teachers:  Collaborate with their colleagues  Cooperate with their administrators  Work collaboratively with parents  Take advantage of community resources

Characteristics of Good Teachers  There are multiple ways to be good or excellent  Becoming a good teacher is a lifelong process  A teacher is molded by both formal and informal experiences in and out of classrooms
