INTRODUCTION The point of this project is to study the connection between the percent of students CAPT and the percent of students who receive free or reduced lunch. The data in this project will prove that there is a strong relationship between the two. The larger amount of students receiving free or reduced lunch the percent of students receiving free or reduced lunch will increase.

DATA The data collected for this project was found at The Connecticut State Department of Education website. The information is from the years

Mean data point that I calculated from the data is: (16.49, 51.56) The line of regression calculated is y= -.84x The correlation coefficient is -.90, this proves that the relationship between x and y is very strong. The correlation is almost perfectly linear. In terms of the students who receive free or reduced lunch percent and the schools overall CAPT score, the larger the percent of students receiving free or reduced lunch, the smaller the percent of students that pass CAPT.

FICTION TOWN: BARNSVILLE The two fiction towns I created are Barnsville and Fieldburg. y= -.84x In the town of Barnsville 26.7 students receive free or reduced lunch, using the equation I calculated the y ( percent of students passing CAPT.) Y= -.84 (26.7) Y= Then I plugged in the y I found into the linear equation to find x = -.84X = -.84X x / -.84 = X X = Then I graphed the new points I found on the graph ( 26.70, 49.63)

FICTION TOWN: FIELDBURG In the town of Fieldburg, percent of their students passed CAPT, to find the percent of students who receive free or reduced lunch I plugged in in to the linear regression = -.84X = -.84x = -.84x /-.84=x X=37.90 Then after finding x, I used the x point I found and plugged it into the equation. y= -.84x Y= -.84(37.90) Y= Y= (37.90, 40.22)

The reasonableness of the predictions of the fiction towns is very accurate. The new data created from the linear regression correlates with the other data collected. The points are very close to the line of best fit. The linear model compares very closely to the linear regression that the calculator created. Reasonableness of the fiction towns

OVERVIEW OF THE DATA This project has taught me that poverty plays a large role in students education. Schools were a majority of their students receive free or reduced lunch usually results in poor CAPT scores. The students at the poverty stricken schools struggle to survive on the simple things we take for granted. The students at the schools effected with poverty may not have high expectations for themselves because of their circumstances, whereas students at schools with more money and support are pushed to exceed their very best in CAPT and school. Schools with few students receiving free or reduced lunch do better on their CAPT average scores because the students may have less to worry about then students with poverty. The students with poverty are not expected to do as well as other students and there for do not want to push themselves or care for school. The students who receive free or reduced lunch are expected to score poorly on the CAPT, however this is not necessarily the case because some students may have the determination to push themselves even in their unfortunate poverty. A solution to this problem could be for schools were they have more students in poverty they could provide incentives for them to do well on CAPT and in school.
