Anglican Diocese in New England Bishop’s Address 6

Bishop’s Address to Synod 2012 Greetings to all and to our honored Guests The Mission of the Anglican Diocese in New England is to reach out with the transforming love of Jesus Christ. “So that people, communities, and cultures are conformed to the fullness of Christ.” (Standing Committee and Ministry Leaders September 2012) Are we doing that? 7

Bishop’s Address to Synod 2012 The Church in New England: How are we doing? Gallup Poll suggests we are at 40% weekly attendance in US. Others think it is worse… We are at only half of what Gallup is projecting

Bishop’s Address to Synod 2012 Startling Facts: An Up Close Look at Church Attendance in America “ Less than 20% of Americans regularly attend church—half of what the pollsters report. While Gallup polls and other statisticians have turned in the same percentage—about 40% of the population—of average weekend church attendees for the past 70 years, a different sort of research paints quite a disparate picture of how many Americans attend a local church on any given Sunday.” Rebecca Barnes and Lindy Lowry, Outreach Magazine

Bishop’s Address to Synod 2012 The Academics have questioned the numbers for a long time. American Sociological Review concludes, “We have shown that American Church Attendance rate is probably about one half of what everyone thinks it is.” ( Kirk Hadaway, United Church Board of Homeland Ministries, Penny Long Marler, Stanford University, Mark Chaves, University Notre Dame)

Bishop’s Address to Synod 2012 The current numbers from the 2010 Gallup poll for New England average weekly church attendance are: Maine 31 Massachusetts 31 Rhode Island 28 Vermont 24 New Hampshire 24

Bishop’s Address to Synod 2012 This is the link to the Gallup numbers online attendance-lowest-new-england-highest- south.aspx#2 attendance-lowest-new-england-highest- south.aspx#2

Bishop’s Address to Synod 2012 What does this look like at the local level in New England? Example, Amesbury: Out of population of 16,283, if we were at half of the 31% Gallup says we would get approximately 15% of the total in church every week. Actually, we are at a number that looks like less than 8 out 10 people are in church. Throughout New England, which Gallup recognizes as the lowest per capita church attendance in the nation, we are actually in a more difficult situation than Gallup suggests. EX. If it was 31% in Amesbury, our 10 churches would be averaging over 504 people per Sunday. (Not even close) 13

Bishop’s Address to Synod 2012 What is the difference between how Jesus did his ministry of Disciple Making and how we are doing it? Discipleship and Mission are the way Jesus sent us to build His Church: Are we Building the church that Jesus is building? Are we making disciples the way he made disciples? Jesus what‘s the difference? We all are committed to Matt.28:19, 20. We understand the 3, the 12, the 70, and the crowds… But what’s the difference? 14

Bishop’s Address to Synod 2012 Jesus and Disciple Making in John’s Gospel Backwards from the Resurrection – John 20:21 …”Even so I am sending you” – John 14:12…”do the works that I do and greater works” – John 5:19 …”the Son can do nothing of his own, but only what He sees the Father doing.” John 5:30...”I can do nothing on my own but as I hear I judge 15

Bishop’s Address to Synod 2012 Jesus, what is the difference? How do we work more directly with you in your manner of disciple making? Are we building the church that you are building? What is the relationship between apostle and disciple in this process? Matt.16:

Bishop’s Address to Synod 2012 The Break through for Peter: Jesus asks the Question. Disciples answer. Jesus asks again. Peter answers. Jesus blesses. Peter hears from the Father. Jesus declares. The faith, the content and the manner of Peter’s confession is to be a rock for building the church. Jesus promises that the Gates of Hell will not prevail. Jesus gives authority. 17

Bishop’s Address to Synod 2012 Jesus is building His Church through apostolic discipleship that is sent to see and hear what the Father is doing and follow His call and leading to the edge of our capacity and then stepping beyond.

Bishop’s Address to Synod 2012 Apostolic Leadership and Disciple Making A creedal definition of apostolic…. Just as we understand catholic as an adjective to describe the nature of the church, so apostolic is a description of content, teaching and method of leadership development in ministry. When does the church begin to be apostolic? 19

Bishop’s Address to Synod 2012 The breakthrough of apostolic awareness in Peter’s life looks like : – Hearing the Father – Confession of Faith – Risk of Obedience – Receiving a Blessing Jesus builds his church through developing apostolic leaders, sent to see and hear what the Father is doing, who respond in faith and obedience, and disciple others in the same manner. 20

Bishop’s Address to Synod 2012 After the Breakthrough then the work begins: – Peter misses the next one; Jesus rebukes him – Peter continues to go with Jesus as one of the 3. – Peter walks on water, is at the Transfiguration, denies Jesus on Maundy Thursday. – Is restored in the Upper Room – Peter preaches at Pentecost. – Acts 3, Peter heals the lame man at the temple. Jesus builds his church through a supernatural partnership of faith that expects divine assistance and direction in day to day work of following Christ on mission in the world. 21

Bishop’s Address to Synod 2012 Jesus training the Apostles looks different than from our discipling programs: – In Mk 3:14: The Apostles are called to be with Him that he might send them – Mk 6:7-13: They are sent 2x2, with authority over unclean spirits, proclaiming good news, casting out demons, healing the sick by anointing with oil. – Matt.10: 1-5, Lk.91-6;10:1-17: The 70 are told to do the same. – Jesus training of disciples in apostolic ministry was on-the job-training, 1/3 of which was within the capacity of human ability and 2/3 of which was always beyond human capacity. 22

Bishop’s Address to Synod 2012 A quote from Radical,by David Platt page 50 “But what is strangely lacking in the picture of the (church) is desperation for the power of God. God's power is at best an add-on to our strategies. I am frightened by the reality that the church I lead can carry on most of our activities smoothly, efficiently, even successfully, never realizing that the Holy Spirit of God is virtually absent from the picture.” Performances, personalities, programs,& professionals, are all that is needed for church?

Bishop’s Address to Synod 2012 What if we focused on the 2/3 factors in the apostolic approach to disciple making and church building that Jesus used? What if we as ADNE/ACNA Christians used the three streams to help us? – Reformed /Catholic stream, learning to watch and listen. (Canon Skillen and Spiritual Formation) – The Evangelical Stream based in the Word and a passion for the lost. (ADNE Mission Events) – The Charismatic Stream living and ministering in the power of the Spirit. (Canon Mueller/Deb Baldini intercessory and healing prayer conferences)

Bishop’s Address to Synod 2012 Apostolic discipleship training is like learning to trust your “Garmin.” 25

Bishop’s Address to Synod 2012 Apostolic discipleship training is like learning to trust your “Garmin” because it asks for: – Awareness that grows out of Obedience. (Luke 6:46) – It is a life of waiting for the invitation. – It is a life dependent on God. – It is a life of expectation and discovery. – It is a life that follows illumination and insight. – It acts with obedience and authority. – It seeks to act always in right order. 26

Bishop’s Address to Synod 2012 It is like going to Mordor. 27

Going to the gates of hell, where we lose control and pursue a task that we know we cannot complete on our own. 28

It is abandonment to Divine Providence 29

Bishop’s Address to Synod 2012 Apostolic discipleship training happens in community – ADNE Mission Events – ADNE Mission Groups – ADNE Mission Stations – St Aidans Institute – Prayer and Healing Ministry – Spiritual Direction/Formation Ministry – Deliverance Ministry Trainings 30

Bishop’s Address to Synod 2012 What does this change? – We will partner with Jesus in building the church that He is building in the ways He has always built His church. – Jesus is building His Church through apostolic discipleship that is sent to see and hear what the Father is doing and follow His call and leading to the edge of our capacity and then step beyond. 31

Bishop’s Final Remarks New Mission Groups We will meet regularly with clergy and lay pastors from each of the new mission stations in greater Boston, Connecticut and Maine (and around New England as we grow new mission groups) for: PrayerTraining Networking Celebrating new harvests Collaboration We will access resources and support from the Bishop, ADNE staff, Anglican 1000 and ACNA. 71

Bishop’s Final Remarks New Mission Stations These are the basic building blocks of the church’s mission… Small groups of committed disciples, establishing community, praying into the call of God for their neighborhoods and towns Evangelism, prayer and healing, community development and spiritual formation are all outwardly focused, Holy Spirit dependent. Hospitality and servanthood define our lives and the culture’s concept of the church. (Matthew Parties) 72

Bishop’s Final Remarks Developing/Training Leadership ADNE is committed to training both our clergy and lay leadership for the mission of the gospel. New mission groups are a great front-line context for training of local leadership with a focus on skill development and content. A crucial element is a concentration on prayer and healing of leadership by and for each other. Mentoring the coaches who oversee lay pastors or new clergy in each of the mission stations is key. 73

Bishop’s Final Remarks Sustaining the Mission Prayerful dependence on the direction of the Holy Spirit Connection with other ADNE ministries through communication shared contacts knowing and celebrating what God is doing in ADNE ministries throughout New England stewardship and generosity (“the gospel is free but we have to pay to pipe it in”.) Development of an ADNE develop office for long term planned giving. 74

Bishop’s Final Remarks New ADNE Initiatives 2012,2013,2014 St. Aidan’s Institute for gathering clergy and lay faculty for teaching and training building an accessible Institute for training in ministry and preparation for ordination at the local church level.
