E-Book Lending at the Spanish Libraries Presentation at the NAPLE E-Book Working Group Meeting, 12th May 2014 Concha Vilariño Subdirectorate of Library Coordination

MISSION The project E-Book Lending at the Spanish Libraries aims to take the new formats of digital media into the Spanish public libraries. Set up by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport, is based on the cooperation with the different autonomous regions that will manage the platform and the digital content available for lending.

STARTING POINT 26th June 2013 – Meeting for discussing the problems and opportunities of e-books lending: 25 representatives of the sectors involved: public libraries, publishers, distributors, booksellers and other experts, and library professionals from Ministry and the Autonomous Communities and other public administrations At the same the Ministry announced a call for tenders to create the platform and acquire a set of licenses

Autonomous Communities (1/3) The e-lending project consists in an online platform that will give access to the e-books and will be managed independently by each one of the 17 Autonomous Communities and the 2 Autonomous Cities (Ceuta and Melilla).

Autonomous Communities (2/3) It’s an Open project: The interfaz of this platform is flexible so can adapt to the 19 different web pages that will provide access to the e-books It’s been translated to all of the official languages. A basic set of books will be offered but the Communities can add more titles to it.

Autonomous Communities (3/3) A Working Group on E-Book at the Public Libraries Commission in the frame of the Council for Library Cooperation will be created where members of each Autonomous Communities and Cities will have their representatives. This Commission will have the responsibility of monitoring and enhancing the platform

The platform eBiblio The e-lending platform allows users: -Browsing the collection (lists of recommendations, novelties, etc.) - Searching books by tags (ISBN, title, author, etc.) - The user´s account allows to manage the electronic devices associated

The platform Ebiblio. Lending Once the users have found a book they can get more detailed information, by clicking the ebook cover or title. They can see the availability of the document: Available, reserved, not available The users can request to the library new titles (desideratas)

The platform Ebiblio. Types of reading - Streaming -Cloud reading through apps for IOS and Android with DRM -Personal computers and e-readers

The platform Ebiblio. Backoffice -2 levels of administration: -Librarian: to manage the lending service -Administrator: to manage the lending service, the acquisition of licenses, and content edition

Statistics - Qlikview is the tool used for statistics to obtain figures about: -General (nº of users, lendings, reserves, of licenses, etc.) -Users (collections, subjects, languages, publishers, formats, etc.) -Lendings (renewals, reservations and, returns) -Licenses management

License acquisition and distribution The Ministry has acquired licenses of titles in 3 formats: epub, pdf, and mp3 (audiobooks) The criteria for distributing these contents among all the Autonomous Communities is strictly demographic, based on 2013 figures.
