Introduction to a tool for effective processes Enterprise Architecture and Archimate Welcome! Context – The Enable Project and JISC Benefits Realisation Introductions – Where are we with Enterprise Architecture? Housekeeping

About The Day > Short Introduction to Enterprise Architecture Practical Session 1 – Jigsaw Group Exercise About the ArchiMate Modelling Language Practical Session 2 – using Archi Break Practical Session 3 – adding to the model Case Study: Using EA to improve our External Examiner process Summary and getting more information

Enterprise Architecture and ArchiMate Modelling Raymond Reid Good Morning everyone, I’d like to start the day by giving an introduction to Enterprise Architecture & Archimate Modelling And whilst we go find out a little of how your organisation’s work.

Enterprise Architecture Applications Data Technology Enterprise Architecture is about the IT architecture of your enterprise – such as Application Software, Data Files and Servers ...... “Bring up anything mentioned in the introductions, if it links in”

Enterprise Architecture People Processes Information Applications Data Technology ...... plus the people, processes and information that gets passed around. All the behaviours that people undertake to do useful things for the organisation

Enterprise Architecture People Processes Information Applications Data Technology Crucially it is about how all this is interdependent - how it all works together ‘INTER’ ‘DE’ ‘PEN’ ‘DENT’ 

‘Doing’ EA Enterprise Architecture is both Process Product Enterprise Architecture is about the Process and the Product. The Process covers the approach you take to solve the problems and we will look at that later. The Product is the thing you are creating - an abstraction of how your organisation operates.

The Model Normally you do not have a blank canvas, you are starting from a position where there are already loads of things in place, such as processes, databases, documents, etc. The modelling is used to add or remove things and check how the changes affect the way things work in other areas. This is akin to City Planning, such as what was done in Beijing when a full replica model of the entire metropolitan area was produced to plan changes ahead of the Olympics in 2008. You are producing the electronic equivalent of this.

Views of the model UML Diagrams A view of the model is anything that will capture information about the current state. These could include From the technical/software developer side of things this could be programming language diagrams (UML Diagrams)

Views of the model Workflows Managers may well be involved with Workflows

Views of the model Process Maps The Business Analyst perspective may involves Process Maps

Views of the model Lists There could also be Lists of tables with information not held in other formats, such as locations, or physical hardware

Views of the model Archimate Views In addition there will be the Archimate Model View – which we are looking at today. The Archimate View can be a key part of the Enterprise Architecture as they tie together the different parts.

Views of the model Reports Managers may well be involved with Workflows or Reports

In groups look at the PEL process outline Practical 1: a Jigsaw Modelling Exercise Prior Experiential Learning Model (PEL) In groups look at the PEL process outline Using the cards provided, put together a model of the system To get you started we have a group exercise putting together a simple model for a Prior Experiential Learning (PEL) accreditation process. For anyone who has not looked at ArchiMate modeling before this will introduce you to the terminologies used.

PEL > A student submits a claim for PEL to cover a module on their Award A lecturer acting as the PEL expert meets with the student to check the claimed experience is sufficient match to the Learning Outcomes If it is, the claim is then passed to the University PEL committee The PEL committee then decide if the claim is acceptable If it is, the accreditation is then recorded in the Student Record System by Faculty admin The exercise is to use the labeled jigsaw pieces to build a map of the process outlined above. In our final version we have used all the pieces but don’t panic if you cannot see how they should fit together. You have a sheet outlining the process in more details and a diagram explaining the meaning of the various labels

Exercise 1 Model Solution The sheets we have passed out during the break shows our model of the Prior Experiential Learning process. We will look in a little more detail at some of the parts of this model a little later, but first we want to cover the process which allows you to acquire the information that allows you to build the information for your model
