National Standards for Arts Education-1994 By: Katie M. Deaver Ed. 360 Foundations of Music Education

History Developed by the Consortium of National Arts Education Associations ( with guidance from the National Committee for Standards in the Arts) Published in 1994 through a grant from MENC (Music Educators National Conference)

About the Standards The standards outline the desired arts learning outcome for students in K-12 American schools Standards for Dance, Music, Theatre, and Visual Arts Split into grade groupings (K-4, 5-8, 9-12)

Music Standards ( All Grades) Singing, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music Performing on instruments, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music Improvising melodies, variations, and accompaniments Composing and arranging music within specified guidelines

Music Standards (All Grades) cont. Reading and notating music Listening to, analyzing, and describing music Evaluating music and music performances Understanding relationships between music, the other arts, and disciplines outside the arts Understanding music in relation to history and culture

Other Facts Many of the standards are similar (or exactly the same) for all grade levels Many states have or are developing their own standards for arts education
