With a spiraling curriculum, concepts are taught throughout the year. Each time we revisit a concept, skills improve, knowledge deepens, and technique is refined. Read this slide.

4 A Spiraling, Standards-Based Curriculum
National Standards New Hampshire State Standards Singing, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music. Performing on instruments, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music. Improvising melodies, variations, and accompaniments. Composing and arranging music within specified guidelines. Reading and notating music. Listening to, analyzing, and describing music. Evaluating music and music performances. Understanding relationships between music, the other arts, and disciplines outside the arts. Understanding music in relation to history and culture. Singing, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music. Performing on instruments, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music. Improvising melodies, variations, and accompaniments. Band Mrs. Susan Hahs Sectionals instructors: Mrs. Hahs (6, 7, & 8) Mrs. Butterfield (6, 7, & 8) Band rehearses every other day all year long. Sectionals meet once per 6-day cycle in 7th & 8th Grade. Sectionals meet once every other 6-day cycle in 6th Grade, tentatively starting 2nd quarter.

Slight departure into more technological aspects of music in 8th grade. Classes meet in our “MIDI Lab” classroom.

CHORUS/VOCAL OPPORTUNITIES Collaboration with KSC Music Department, The Colonial Theatre, MoCo, professional vocal coaches Show Choir Drama Club Musical (professional choreography consultant) NHMEA District Festival (in May) STRINGS OPPORTUNITIES ASTA StringsFest (in March) BAND OPPORTUNITIES Beginning and Advanced Jazz Bands, Jazz Improvisation (world-renown jazz musician) Band/Strings ELP NHBDA Middle-Level Honors Band (in March) ELP PROGRAMS DURING FSG Large Ensemble ELP: Chorus/Band, Chorus/Strings, Strings/Band Small Ensembles ELP: Chamber music groups independently prepare repertoire OPPORTUNITIES FOR ALL Numerous practice rooms encourage after school collaboration and chamber groups Janis Wetmore Scholarship Talent Show Our program is as strong as it is because our programs don’t stop at the end of the school day. We offer many opportunities for students to broaden their horizons during after school hours. In addition, our department finds ways to make connections with professionals within our community and with middle school music programs across the state.
