Broadband Communication Systems achievements and ambitions in creating our future communication world Ton Koonen COBRA Institute Eindhoven University of Technology With acknowledgements to the BCS partners for their contributions! NIRICT Strategiedag, Utrecht, 12 Feb. 2009

amjk 2 SRA BCS goal To provide the technologies for wide-ranging, congestion-free, energy-efficient, versatile and self-organising communication networks which can provide a wide variety of services, and possess the capabilities for autonomously matching network resources to user demands by elaborating the themes Wideband communication techniques (radio, photonics) Self-organised adaptive radio spectrum utilisation techniques Format-transparent ultra-fast signal transport and routing (photonics, radio over fibre) Energy efficiency ( ‘green ICT’ )

amjk 3 SRA BCS partners TUD: Electronics (Long) Large-area electronics (Beenakker) Circuits and Systems (V.d. Veen) Wireless & Mobile Comm. (Niemegeers) Electr. Comp. Techn. & Materials (Sarro) TUE: Electromagnetics/Wireless Comm. (Tijhuis, Fledderus) Electro-Optical Comm. Syst. (Koonen) - Network Communication Prot. (Liotta) Opto-electronic Devices (Smit) Mixed Signal Microelectr. (V. Roermund) Signal Processing Syst. (Bergmans) Phot. Semicond. & Nanophot. (Nötzel, Koenraad) Molecular Mat. & Nanosystems (Janssen) Technology Mgt. (Smits) Stoch. Operations Res. (Boxma) Discrete Math. (V. Tilborg) UT: Integr. Optical Micro Syst. (Pollnau) Integr. Circuit Design (Nauta) Signals and Systems (Slump) Design and Analysis of Comm. Syst. (Haverkort) Short Range Radio (vac.)

amjk 4 BCS workplan* close co-operation with industry, and between university groups (joint lab experiments, traineeships, re-education, …) joint initiatives for national (SmartMix, Freeband, IOP, …) and international (FP7, …) projects alignment of research and education activities “3TU Telecom overleg” * as stated in NIRICT Kick-off meeting, Utrecht, Mar. 22, 2007

amjk 5 Achievements – joint research Co-operation of BCS partners in Dutch programmes: Freeband Impulse projects(AIRLINK, MGDM, TUC, OTDM, …) Freeband Main projects (WiComm, Broadband Photonic Access, AAF) IOP GenCom projects (radio-over-fibre in-home networks, multimode fibre access networks, Future Home Networks, MIMO in a mass market, SiGiSpot, …) SmartMix MEMPHIS Successful! but NOT in European programmes FP6, FP7 (exception: PANAMA in Catrene)

amjk 6 Achievements – cooperation with industry Freeband AAF PON λ – Router FlexPON enabling a flexible on-demand capacity offering Freeband BBPA silicon 1.68mm x 1.78mm 2 60 GHz power amp/antenna Freeband WiComm

amjk 7 Achievements – 3TU alignment New CEDICT chairs *Network Communication Protocols - TUE, Antonio Liotta, per Oct *Short Range Radio - UT, Scanlon/Bentum *Ad-hoc networking - TUD, M. El Zarki Meeting to align research in wireless technologies at TUD, UT, and TUE; at TUE, Dec. 1, 2008 Centre for Wireless Technologies Eindhoven established; scientific director Peter Baltus RF/sub-mm-wave lab established at TUD Master Broadband Telecommunication Technologies at TUE Master Telecommunication Networks at UT Master Telecommunications in TUD

amjk 8 Future plans SRA BCS Start co-operation in education; exchange lecturers? Acting jointly in international research programmes Continuing/extending co-operation in national programmes but notwithstanding excellent achievements in previous programmes (Freeband, IOP GenCom) + spinoff to national industry, physical layer research seems to get forgotten in new programmes (cf. FES), strategy organisations (ICT Regie), and strategy documents (cf. Masterplan ICT) I CT should become ICT again !!!
