What we do Information o Historic Environment Record Advice o Strategic planning – County and District o Development Management – County/District o Land management advice eg Environmental Stewardship Practical conservation and heritage management o Heritage at Risk Outreach and education Portable Antiquities Scheme Survey and investigation eg FoD survey, RCZA

What we do in Cheltenham Strategic Planning o Joint core strategy: policy, land allocations Development management o 1215 applications in screened against HER, advice provided Historic Environment Record o HER records in database and GIS, including archaeological sites, historic buildings o Historic Landscape Characterisation, urban surveys, historic maps, + o HER21 project – improving the quality of the built historic environment coverage, providing wider access

Changing contexts Archaeology and the built historic environment: o Separate legislation, policy, and (in 2 tier areas) service delivery o Post 2010: joined up historic environment policy in PPS5 and NPPF o New legislation in future, bringing together archaeology and the built historic environment ? o Potential for joining up service delivery? Local authorities: o Diminishing resources o Impetus to collaborate on service delivery

Potential areas for cooperation Key and enduring need for conservation advice relating to the built historic environment that is both expert and local, but: Can we work together better across the 2 tiers, joining up advice on the historic environment? Can we work better together over the county as a whole (and beyond?), pooling/swopping resources when needed? Would any of this: o Save money o Deliver a better service for the public o Access additional resources? Is there work to do to explore these possibilities?
