School Community Engagement AISI Cycle 5

CBE Community Engagement Plan Gather information through community and stakeholder forums for the purpose of planning AISI projects Form an AISI Community Engagement group to participate in the implementation and supporting of AISI projects throughout Cycle 5 2

What is the purpose of todays discussion? Review our timelines and what can be accomplished Begin the process of creating an AISI Action for our school development plan Review a community engagement process that will provide an opportunity for staff and community input Understand the how the work of AISI is supported and integrated with our work in schools 3

What is an AISI Action? One specific element selected from the school development plan (theory of action, instructional goal, achievement goal) that is focussed on the system direction of personalized learning and has potential for innovation This element is developed into an AISI Action that represents the AISI aspect of school ongoing work 4

What is meant by innovation? An innovation can be understood as an idea, a practice or artefact that has the potential for transforming teacher practice and improving student learning 5

What informs the creation of the AISI Action? Analysing data to reveal where we are now (our strengths and our needs) in order to determine where we want to go next 6

What informs the creation of the AISI Action? Engaging in discussion with teachers and school staff Engaging in discussion with the school community 7

How do we create an AISI Action? Sample school Theory of action: If teachers develop capacity in formative assessment of writing requiring high levels of student agency then learning tasks will engage students in developing complex thinking skills. Sample school instructional goal: Staff will work with more intentional focus on formative assessment strategies in writing Sample school achievement goal: Learner engagement and performance in critical thinking, problem solving and decision making will improve 8

Sample AISI Action Sample AISI Action template: PLCs will develop innovative ways of using (name of strategy – aspect of instructional goal) to engage learners in (aspect of achievement goal) Sample school AISI action: PLCs will develop innovative ways of using peer and self assessment in writing to engage learners in critical thinking, problem solving and decision making. 9

Sample AISI Action (2) Sample school Theory of action: If teachers develop capacity in working with CBEs online learner profile application (IRIS) then teachers will gather descriptive formative assessment information in order to plan instruction. Sample school instructional goal: Teachers will use data gathered from student profiles to plan instructional design in support of school achievement goal. Sample school AISI action: PLCs will develop (innovative) ways of using student learning profiles for instructional design that will increase student performance and engagement in critical thinking, problem solving and decision making. 10

What is the framework for AISI Cycle 5 ? System Research Question Specific in intent (personalization); broad in scope (invites schools to identify a specific action developed from their instructional goal) School Instructional Goal (actions taken) Site based expression of what will be done based on system direction School Achievement Goal (measurable) Site based expression of what will be measured AISI Action Specific expression of what will be done and what will be measured School Theory of Action Site based expression of system direction 11

Potential System Research Questions How does personalized learning increase student intellectual engagement and student success? How does personalized learning increase student intellectual engagement and student achievement? To what extent does personalized learning increase student intellectual engagement and student success? To what extent does personalized learning increase student intellectual engagement and student achievement? What are the ways in which learning can be personalized to improve intellectual engagement and success in learning? (ne suggestion arising from principal forums) 12

Other suggestions? 13
