HOLES ARE AS FOLLOWS: ODDS LEFT/EVENS RIGHT POSITIONS ARE FROM LEFT TO RIGHT: X = SPLIT END, T = TACKLE, G=GUARD, C=CENTER, Y=TIGHT END, Z = SLOT RECEIVER, QB=QUARTERBACK, 3=FULLBACK, 2=TAILBACK x X T G C G T Y 7 5 3 1 2 4 6 8 QB Z 3 2

PLAY CALLING: THE PLAY CALL STARTS WITH THE “Y” POSITION, IT IS FOLLOWED BY THE “SLOT” OR ‘Z’ POSITION, THEN THE BALL CARRIER IS DESIGNATED, THEN THE HOLE HE IS RUNNING TO IS GIVEN ALONG WITH THE TYPE OF PLAY. THE “X” POSITION ALWAYS LINES UP OPPOSITE THE “Y”. THEREFORE, A PLAY CALL IN THE HUDDLE WOULD SOUND LIKE; Y RIGHT, SLOT RIGHT, 24 LEAD. THIS MEANS THAT THE “Y” OR TIGHT END POSITION LINES UP ON THE RIGHT SIDE, THE SLOT OR “Z” POSITION LINES UP ON THE RIGHT, THE “X” POSITION LINES UP LEFT, THE TAILBACK WILL BE GETTING THE BALL AND RUNNING TO THE 4 HOLE. IN THE MANY DIAGRAMS THAT FOLLOW YOU CAN SEE THIS ILLUSTRATED.

LINE OF SCRIMMAGE ______________________________ HUDDLE - LINEMAN STAND WITH THEIR HANDS ON THEIR KNEES, QB GETS PLAY FROM THE COACH, THEN KNEELS AND CALLS THE PLAY TWICE, EVERYONE BREAKS THE HUDDLE AND LINES UP FOR THE PLAY. HUDDLE IS CALLED BY CENTER IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING PREVIOUS PLAY. Z Y 2 3 X RT RG C LG LT QB LINE OF SCRIMMAGE ______________________________

Y RIGHT SLOT RIGHT 24 LEAD VS. 6-3 – 2 BACK THROUGH THE 4 HOLE Y RIGHT SLOT RIGHT 24 LEAD VS. 6-3 – 2 BACK THROUGH THE 4 HOLE. 3- BACK BLOCKS THE FIRST PLAYER INSIDE OR OUTSIDE THE HOLE. BASIC RULE OF THUMB ON ALL LEAD PLAYS IS POSITION OF DT. IF DT IS HEAD UP OR OUTSIDE OF PLAYSIDE OT THEN THE PLAY IS RUN INSIDE THE TACKLE, IF DT IS INSIDE OT PLAY IS RUN OUTSIDE OF TACKLE. ONLY EXCEPTION IS THE RARE 5-2 DEFENSE THEN THE PLAY IS RUN THROUGH THE 2 HOLE AND THE NOSE IS DOUBLE-TEAMED. REMEMBER FB DOES NOT HAVE TO DESTROY DEFENDER, IF TB IS GOING FULL SPEED MERELY MAKING CONTACT SHOULD BE ENOUGH TO ALLOW TB TO BREAK FREE, BUT HE MUST MAKE CONTACT. x Y X Z X AND Z STALK BLOCK 3 2

WE CAN RUN THE SAME PLAYS OUT OF A ‘SPLIT BACK’ FORMATION AS SHOWN BELOW. WE CALL THIS FORMATION ‘PRO’. THE BLOCKING ASSIGNMENTS REMAIN THE SAME. EX: PRO, Y RIGHT, SLOT RIGHT 24 LEAD x Y X Z 2 3

ANOTHER FORMATION WE RUN IS ‘DOUBLE TIGHT’ ANOTHER FORMATION WE RUN IS ‘DOUBLE TIGHT’. IN DOUBLE TIGHT THE ‘X’ MOVES IN TIGHT TO THE LINE AS SHOWN. EX: PRO, DOUBLE TIGHT RIGHT, SLOT RIGHT 24 LEAD x X Y Z 2 3

WE ALSO CAN PUT THE SLOT RECEIVER IN MOTION TO THE OPPOSITE SIDE BY CALLING ‘ZOOM’. EX: PRO Y RIGHT, SLOT RIGHT ZOOM, 24 LEAD x X Y Z Z Z 2 3
