A Brief History of the Regions of France Before the French Revolution of 1789, France was made up of about 30 provinces. During the Revolution, the département, was created. The purpose of départements was to break up the power of the old provinces and centralize authority. There are currently 95 départements in France and 22 regions/provinces of France.
