The Acropolis was built on a hill in the middle of the city of Athens. Surrounded by stone walls, originally the people could retreat when the city was attacked. Later it was used for temples (and as a fortress)

The Acropolis At the center of Acropolis is the Parthenon that was dedicated to the goddess Athena and was also used to store gold. But in the Acropolis there were other temples too (Temple of Athena Nike and Erechtheum)

The Acropolis On the slope of Acropolis were theatres too: the Theatre of Dionysus and the Theatre of Herodes Atticus. Both of them were so good that all people (up to 25.000) could see and hear the play. Parthenon Theatre of Dionysus Theatre of Herodes Atticus

The Asty The Asty was where the people lived and where the agorà was. The agorà was surrounded by government buildings like the Mint, where coins were made, and the Strategeion, where the Strategoi, military leaders, met.

The Agorà The Agorà was a place for people to meet and discuss ideas on philosophy and government. This is the place where the DEMOCRACY of ancient Greece first came to life.
