Chapter 9: Lesson 3: Converting Fractions, Decimals, and Percents Objective: We will learn to understand the relationship between percents, fractions, and decimals.
Since percent means “out of 100” to write a percent as a fraction, you have to rewrite the percent using 100 as the denominator. Then put the fraction in simplest form. 30% = 30 = 3 100 10 Steps: 1. Write the percent over a 100 to turn it into a fraction. 2. Re-write the fraction in lowest terms or simplest form. Your Example: Write 42% as a fraction in lowest terms.
To write a percent as a decimal, you must move the decimal point two places to the left. (Add zeros as needed.) For example: Write 65% as a decimal. (If there is no decimal point in the percent, there is always an invisible decimal point at the end of the last digit. You must move that decimal 2 places to the left. ) 65% = 65. = 0.65 ⏎2 places to the left Your Example: Write 4.3% as a decimal.
For example: Write the decimal 0.78 as a percent. 0.78 = 78. = 78% To change a decimal into a percent you must do the opposite and move the decimal 2 decimal places to the right. For example: Write the decimal 0.78 as a percent. 0.78 = 78. = 78% 2 places to the right Your example: Write the decimal 0.875 as a percent.
To turn a fraction into a percent… You can use division to write a fraction as a percent. For example: Write 3 as a percent. 5 Steps: 1. Divide 3 ÷ 5 = 0.6 (You will get a decimal. 2. Then you must move the decimal point 2 places to the right to rewrite the decimal as a percent. 0.6 = 0.60 = 60% Move the decimal 2 places to the right Your example: Write the fraction 5 as a percent. 7
