5th Grade Curriculum Math Block (60 Minute Block) We are using Math In Focus We are currently studying Whole Number Place Value. Social Studies (Basic Geography, Ancient Civilizations of North and South America, Native Americans, Explorers) Reading Workshop – (90 Minute ELA Block) “Just Right” Book – Active Reading Strategies Writing – Writer’s Notebook Reading Logs and Responses (Book Talks and Book Tastings) Science – Space Systems, Matter, Geology (Engineering: Egg Drop) 4

Homework Students are required to read for at least 20 minutes a night, 5 nights a week! They will complete a Reading Log each month, starting in October. Spelling and Vocabulary will rotate each week. (Wednesday to Wednesday) Math will be given most evenings. Please sign your child’s agenda each night.

Tests, Quizzes, Reports and Projects Tests - All tests will be announced. Quizzes - Most quizzes will be announced. Reports and Projects - Your child will complete several projects. (Science Fair, Biography/Research, Book Talks) 6

Science Fair – March 3rd and 5th Extra Help – Wednesday at 8:30am, unless otherwise specified. Check the Classroom Times each week. Report Cards – Trimester Report Cards/Rubric Grading A report card will be given out at conferences in December. 7

Classroom Rules 1. Follow directions. 2. Keep all hands, feet and objects to yourself. 3. Use positive and appropriate school language at all times. 4. Be prepared. 5. Choose kind. Incentives: Individual Tickets may be earned and then used to “buy” class prizes such as homework passes or sit with a friend passes. The class may earn tokens toward a Mystery Prize. Classroom Times and Friday Test Folders Classroom Times - Your child will receive a handout of the upcoming week’s events in the Friday Test Folder. Test Folders - Tests will go home to be signed on Friday. Please return the folder, with all tests, on Monday. 10

Book Orders - Monthly Scholastic Orders Attendance - Please call by 11am if you would like work sent home. Please send in an absent note when your child returns. 11

Birthday Celebrations - I ask that your child only distribute invitations in class if everyone is invited. We love to celebrate birthdays. You are welcome to send in a peanut and tree nut free treat or birthday item, such as pencils or erasers. Please send in the birthday item by 11am. Snack – Please send in a nutritious snack each day. Students may also bring a water bottle. Parent/Teacher Communication - You may use the agenda planner to jot me a note, call, or email me at school. clevine@commack.k12.ny.us 13

District News E-mail Notification and Parent Portal: Please register for e-mail notification and the parent portal. Visit the main page of the Commack School District website to register. School Messenger: School Messenger will notify parents when there is a school closing, delayed opening, or special event. Many notices that previously have been handed out, in class, are now posted on the Burr website. Remember to check the Backpack News each week.
