Understanding Unit Rate Presented by G. laws 6th grade math

NC Standard/Goal 6.RP.2 – Understand that ratios can be expressed as equivalent unit ratios by finding and interpreting both unit rations in context.

ESSENTIAL QUESTION How do I use rate and unit rate language in the context of a ratio relationship?

Comparison, Equivalent, Ratio, Rate, Unit Rate Key Vocabulary Words Comparison, Equivalent, Ratio, Rate, Unit Rate

What is a ratio? A ratio is a way to compare two different quantities? Example 24 apples to 6 bananas; 4 tennis balls : 5 baseballs. Remember: Ratios can be compared in 3 ways; Part to Part, Part to Whole; Whole to Part.

What is a rate and unit rate? 2. A rate is an equivalent ratio that compares the first quantity in a ratio to only one of the second quantity. Example : 4 cups of nuts to 2 cups of dried fruit; 4:2 3. A unit rate is a rate in which the second quantity in the comparison is one unit. Example: $18 for 3 books; the unit rate is $6.00 per 1 book.

Marco earned $85 for 10 hours of work. Practice Problems Marco earned $85 for 10 hours of work. What is the ratio of dollars earn to hours worked?: Answer:_________ What is the unit rate? Explain

Marco earned $85 for 10 hours of work. Practice Problems Marco earned $85 for 10 hours of work. What is the ratio of dollars earn to hours worked?: Answer: 85 to 10, 85:10, 85/10 What is the unit rate? Explain $8.50 per hour or $8.50

Practice Problems 2. Ryan purchased 3 apples for $1.80, and at a different store, his friend Thomas bought 6 apples for $2.50. Who paid less per apple – Ryan or Thomas? Explain your answer.

Practice Problems 2. Ryan purchased 3 apples for $1.80, and at a different store, his friend Thomas bought 6 apples for $2.50. Who paid less per apple – Ryan or Thomas? Ryan paid $.60 per apple by dividing $1.80 by 3. Thomas paid approx. $.42 per apple by dividing $2.50 by 6. Thomas paid less per apple.
