National Statistics 1,720 minors died in 2017 due to abuse and neglect Highest rate-minors under 1 year 3.5 million reports made in the U.S. in 2017 75% of those minors suffered from maltreatment/ Neglect 18.3 were physically abused 8.6 were sexually abused 7.1% were psychologically abused

National Statistics A report of child abuse is made every ten seconds U.S. has one of the worst records among industrialized nations Approximately 80% of minors that die from abuse are under the age of 4. 1 It is estimated that between 50-60% of minor fatalities due to maltreatment are not recorded as such on death certificates More than 90% of juvenile sexual abuse victims know their perpetrator in some way.

How to Recognize Abuse A parent may tell you of family practices which are abusive A minor may.. describe events which are abusive have injuries which are not consistent with the explanations he or she offers about them have unusually frequent and/or serious injuries or difficulty remaining seated due to physical discomfort have knowledge of sexual matters atypical for someone of the minor’s age

How to Recognize Abuse A minor may.. exhibit serious and otherwise unexplained fears of an older person or another child not have basic needs for food, clothing, and shelter met Demonstrate personality or routine shifts: become atypically depressed Withdraw socially sudden declines in school performance and/or school relationships acting out, lying, or being truant not want to go home

What to Do if You Suspect Abuse or Neglect Phone 1-800-25-ABUSE Follow the instructions the hotline worker gives you Notify your principal, supervisor, and/or director immediately Make sure the report is made!

What Not to Do if You Suspect Abuse or Neglect Don’t call the minor‘s parents to ask if the allegation is true Don’t attempt to examine the minor under normally clothed areas Don’t tell the hotline worker that your report is an emergency unless it is
