All about Energy

The Big Ideas! Energy exists in different forms Energy can change forms but is never lost Technology improves the ways people use energy

Different Forms of Energy have different uses. Almost everything occurring around you involves energy. All forms of energy have one important point in common---they cause changes to occur. Energy: is the ability to cause change or do work.

Forms of Energy Mechanical Sound Chemical Thermal Electromagnetic Nuclear

Exploring the Forms of Energy Mechanical Energy: the energy that moves objects

Exploring the Forms of Energy Sound Energy: energy from the vibration of particles in a solid, liquid, or gas

Exploring the Forms of Energy Chemical Energy: energy that is stored in the chemical composition of matter.

Exploring the Forms of Energy Thermal Energy: the total amount of energy from the movement of particles in matter.

Exploring the Forms of Energy Electromagnetic Energy: energy transmitted through space in the form of electromagnetic waves. (visible light, x-rays, microwaves)

Exploring the Forms of Energy Nuclear energy: the source of nuclear energy is the nucleus of an atom

Kinetic versus Potential Energy Kinetic energy: the energy of motion Kinetic energy INCREASES as mass INCREASES Kinetic energy INCREASES as speed INCREASES

Kinetic vs. Potential Energy Potential Energy (PE)- energy that is stored in an object as a result of position, shape, or chemical composition. Gravitational Potential Energy- related to an object’s mass and height above the ground. Elastic Potential Energy- due to position and shape in an object being compressed or flexed. Not every object that is compressed will contain elastic potential energy. Chemical Potential Energy-due to a substance’s chemical composition (the atoms and bonds contained within the substance).

Kinetic versus Potential Energy Potential energy: the stored energy that an object has due to its position or chemical composition. In terms of motion…. Potential energy INCREASES as mass INCREASES Potential energy INCREASES as height INCREASES

Energy can change forms but is never lost!

Energy can change forms but is never lost! Potential energy is stored in chemicals on the head of a match. The flame of the burning match releases that energy as light and heat.

Energy changes types and forms. Energy can be converted from one type or form to another. Many energy transformations occur between potential and kinetic energy. Example: Ski jumper First: the skier is at the top of the hill. This position gives him potential energy due to gravity. Next: the skier starts moving down hill, some of the potential energy is transferred to kinetic energy. Kinetic energy moves him down the slope to the ramp. Finally: The skier takes off from the ramp, some of the kinetic energy is transferred back into potential energy as he rises in the air.

Law of Conservation of Energy! States that energy can neither be created nor destroyed. Energy changes form
