A guide from Olton Primary Using Bug Club A guide from Olton Primary

What is Bug Club? Bug Club is a powerful whole-school reading programme that is proven to raise attainment in reading and spelling – and loved by over a million children in the UK. It brilliantly combines stunning books and an incredible online reading world, filled to the brim with kid-favourite characters, to hook children into a lifelong love of books and develop confident young readers. Bug Club will work on your laptops, PCs, and is fully iPad compatible so you and your children will be able to access Bug Club on the go. All of Bug Club’s eBooks can be used on iPad 2s, 3s and 4s and on the iPad Mini, with operating system iOS 7.0 or above and with an internet connection to access the service. It is recommend that you use your iPad’s default Safari browser to access Bug Club. If you use Internet Explorer as your web browser, you will need at least IE10 in order for the content to work. Please note, you may currently be able to access Bug Club using Kindle or Android devices, but the activities in the eBook will not work properly so we do not recommend this.

The login page will prompt you to enter your information. Usernames and passwords will be unique to each child. The school code unique to Olton Primary is: r9j6

Upon logging in you will be greeted with your homepage Upon logging in you will be greeted with your homepage. You can direct yourself back to this later using the ‘My Home’ tab. The number of outstanding books that have been assigned to this child is shown in red next to the ‘My Stuff’ tab. Your child’s name Currently unspent reading reward coin balance

You can select one of three interactive homepages by hovering over the ‘My Home’ tab.

After clicking on the ‘My Stuff’ tab, you will be greeted by any outstanding titles that have been uniquely allocated to each child. Books will be allocated weekly. Available coin rewards for reading and completing the quiz for each title is displayed at the bottom.

Once you select an available title, a digital copy will open. Books aimed at earlier reading levels have a ‘Read to me’ option, activated by clicking the button at the bottom of the page. You can navigate through the book using the buttons at the bottom. The red ‘X’ will return you to your outstanding titles.

Books aimed at later reading stages have additional options to view the book as single pages, draw-on and annotate the text, and temporarily hide the Bug Club buttons.

Whilst reading a book you will see Bug Club buttons throughout Whilst reading a book you will see Bug Club buttons throughout. Clicking on these will take you to a question relevant to what is being read. Different books will have different amounts of these quizzes. Every quiz within a book must be completed in order to ‘complete’ the book.

This is the quiz page you are taken to by clicking on the Bug Club button shown on the previous slide. You can return to the book after completing the question, or before if you need to read a little more to help you, by clicking this button in the bottom right of the screen.

You will be congratulated after answering the quiz correctly.

A completed Bug Club button will change colour from yellow and it’s eyes will close.

Once all quizzes are completed within a book, you will receive a coin reward depending on how many questions were in the book. You will also be given the opportunity to rate your enjoyment of the book

When you have completed the book you will see it is removed from your ‘My Stuff’ screen.

‘Completed’ books can still be accessed under the ‘My Library’ tab.

No more coins will be awarded for reading ‘completed’ books, but you are still able to access them whenever you like!

Reward coins can be spent by clicking the ‘My Rewards’ tab Reward coins can be spent by clicking the ‘My Rewards’ tab. You can play mini-games, collect stickers, or decorate your own tree house.
