Repressive desublimation

A hybrid of Marxist and Freudian Theories What does that mean?

What about all that energy? A hybrid is a joining together of two ideas to create another What does Freud mean by sublimation? What about all that energy?

Marcuse has a different view – desublimation occurs when our energies are NOT regulated by the kinds of psychological and social constraints that could cultivate and enhance our positive freedom Which means What?

Our energies are expressed untamed What does Marcuse mean? Our energies are expressed untamed This is our sublime view Desublimation is repressive because it robs of us our ability to fully express our better selves We are alienated from others It’s not in our interests so why does it happen?

Gaining control over us in the interests of consumption From Marx - Marcuse sees political economic structures motivating suppression Gaining control over us in the interests of consumption Creating false needs What are false needs? Pornography ‘Bread’ And ‘circuses’

In an affluent society the authorities are hardly forced to justify their dominion They deliver the goods; they satisfy the sexual and aggressive energy of their subjects The people are free and free people do not need to be liberated

Now try a 15 mark question: Explain and illustrate what is meant by repressive desublimation.
