Why should I complete the FAFSA? ●First step toward getting federal financial aid to help pay for college ●Graduation Requirement in the state of Louisiana ●Some schools will not consider you for merit scholarships unless you have completed the FAFSA

By completing the FAFSA, you are considered for: ●FEDERAL PELL GRANT: money given to you base on need that does not have to be paid back ●WORK STUDY: a part-time on campus job given to you based on need ●STUDENT LOANS: money you borrow and pay back with interest ●STATE BASED TOPS PROGRAM

The FAFSA takes approximately 20-30 minutes to complete if the student and parent have all of the required information at hand. You can begin your FAFSA, save it and return to it within 45 days.

STEP 1: FSA ID Create your Student and Parent FSA IDs at fsaid.ed.gov Student & one parent will each need an FSA ID username & password which serves as your electronic signature on the FAFSA. Student and parent can not use the same email or cell phone number. Name much match ss card.

Step 2: FAFSA The 2020/21 FAFSA will be available on October 1, 2019. Tax information from 2018 will be used. Apply at www.fafsa.gov.

FAFSA checklist ●Parent & Student FSA ID ●Student & Parent Social Security Numbers ●Student Driver’s license number ●Your Alien Registration Number if you are not a U.S. citizen. ●2018 Federal tax information or tax returns including IRS W-2 information for student and parents ●records of untaxed income, such as child support received, interest income, and veterans non-education benefits for student and parents ●Information on cash, savings and checking account balances, and investments

HELPFUL HINTS ●Use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool ●FAFSA should only be completed by student and/or their legal parent. If parents are divorced or if there is any unusual situation, review the link to definition of “parent”. ●It does not matter who claimed the student on their taxes. ●View the FAFSA summary to check for errors before submitting.

Step 3: FAFSA PROCESSED ●You will receive an email stating that your FAFSA has been submitted. ●If your FAFSA does not have errors and is processed then you will receive another email stating it has been successfully processed. ●Turn in a copy of the email confirmation that your “FAFSA has been processed "to your counselor with your FULL NAME written on the top.

Graduation requirement ●Turn in a copy of the email confirmation that your “FAFSA has been processed” (not submitted) to your counselor with your FULL NAME written on the top. ●The Louisiana Department of Education now requires all High School SENIORS complete the FAFSA in order to be eligible for graduation. ●If you are unable to complete the FAFSA please speak with your counselor to discuss alternate options available to fulfill this requirement for graduation.
