FAFSA: Free Application for Federal Student Aid FAFSA.ED.GOV ANY federal or state aid: grants & loans Priority Deadlines vary, so complete it ASAP. You must complete one every year!

6 Why submit the FAFSA? Required in order to be considered for grants and loans to pay for school. Many types of aid are first-come, first served. Some free money is better than no money! There IS NO INCOME CUTOFF for aid. Every college has different costs & types of aid to offer. Your aid can increase or decrease each year you apply.

If the FAFSA tells you to put parents on the FAFSA, but you are unable to do so, please ask a counselor or adviser. You may need to: Contact the financial aid office after you’ve been admitted. Financial aid staff may ask for additional information. Gather as much written evidence of your situation as possible

12 Expected Family Contribution (EFC)
A number the FAFSA produces that is a measure of your family’s financial strength. It helps determine your aid package.

You receive a confirmation page: includes EFC You can access your SAR (Student Aid Report): a “carbon copy” of FAFSA Within 2-3 business days: “processed successfully” Confirms the information has been SENT to colleges In the case of a paper copy:

Award arrival dates vary between institutions Deadlines v. Rolling Admission 4 year v. community colleges Check your and student portals regularly students, not parents Verification - don’t delay! You may have to provide additional information before getting an award

16 Residency Determination Service (RDS)
Service established by NC Legislature to determine residency for students Must be completed to qualify for in-state tuition at public colleges Must be completed to qualify for NC state grants at all colleges Residency for dependent students is based on parent information Students should complete VERY carefully when inputting information

Where to complete? Ncresidency.org (also linked through cfnc.org) Use CFNC username and password to login (make sure your SSN and DOB are accurate in CFNC Profile) BE ACCURATE (Don’t Guess at Info) Upload Documents within 25 days (if required)

When you finish you see: RCN (Residency Certification Number) Classification: Resident or Non-Resident Whether you need to upload documents Don’t agree with determination? Reconsideration (correct or enter additional info) Appeal - you have 10 days to request this!!! DO NOT DELAY!
