Review of Rhett’s Lesson

Setting the Scene Gospel of John Jesus and the disciples are in the upper room Judas has left to betray Christ Peter’s denial has been predicted Last supper over or nearly over

Vineyard Gardening 101 (Lyndle’s version) Grape production need climates that are just right, very sensitive Branches require lots of attention and pruning to avoid wild growth; focus sap for max fruit Exposing plants to stress increases resilience and fruit bearing Wind and small hailstorms, trimming and pruning, etc. So Delicious, So Good!

John 15:1-8 1“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. 3 You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. 4 Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. 5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. 7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.

Discussion What are the 3 key roles that are represented? Who is the vine an image of and Who is the gardener? What does the gardener desire and what does He do? What is the vine dependent on and what is the vine’s job? What is the branch dependent on and what is it expected to do? What MUST occur in order to allow max fruit production? “Remain in Me” = Abiding in Christ What does the metaphor tell us about how to abide in Christ? What’s the role of prayer? What is the sign that we are Christ’s disciples?

John 15:9-16 9 “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10 If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. 11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. 12 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command. 15 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.

Discussion What has Christ done for us? As we remain in Christ, we must also remain in… what? How do we remain in Christ’s love? What is Christ’s command to us? What experience can we expect as a result? Can such a majestic joy be found in any other way? Greatest demonstrations of love come from… what? A key part of our special relationship with Christ is that he shares what with us?

Key Points Jesus was the vine of God’s planting to fulfill a key purpose in us Connect us to him, wash us in his word, save us from death Also to produce fruit through us; Fruit bearing is the one thing you’ve been saved for Our purpose is to allow Christ’s purpose to be fulfilled in us. How is Christ fulfilling his purpose in you? Christ (Vine) depends on God for everything just as we (Branch) should depend on Christ. Don’t let go! Feel the pruning of the gardener and appreciate His purpose, it’s gonna hurt as he helps us tame our desire to be unruly vines There is no better gardener and no better vine to abide in; there will be great fruit The Greatest Joy, shared with Christ comes from loving and sacrificing for others and allowing Christ to fulfill His purpose in and through us.
