Peer Aware Communications (PAC) Scope, Purpose, and Needs

Distinctive features for PAC SG Peer Aware Communications (PAC) Key features: Fully Distributed coordination, Infrastructureless and Peer-to-peer Communications Discovery for peer information without association (peer=device and/or services) Fast association Discovery signaling rate -typically 100kbps The number of devices in the discovery >100 Each device may support several applications Data Transmission rate -typically 10 Mbps Group communications: n to m multi-hop relay Relative Positioning -typically 10m Security, Privacy, Trust Globally available Unlicensed/licensed bands (e.g., below 3GHz, 60 Ghz, UWB)

Scope This standard defines the PHY and MAC specifications for Peer Aware Communications optimized for peer to peer and infrastructureless communications with fully distributed coordination.

Purpose The standard provides peer to peer and infrastructureless communications with fully distributed coordination. It features: discovery for peer information without association, fast association, typical discovery signaling rate of greater than 100 kbps, the number of devices in the discovery of more than 100 devices, scalable data transmission rates of, e.g., typically 10 Mbps, n-to-m group communications, relative positioning, multihop relay, security, and globally available bands.

Need In order to support burgeoning social networking and peer-to-peer applications for mobile devices, the awareness of their proximities for desired services is an important feature for future wireless communications. Current communication infrastructure can support those applications but incurs unbearable signaling overhead and communication latency when to support hundreds of devices in the proximity. Additionally, applications such as social networking requiring security, privacy, and trust will be supported. Potential applications include social networking, advertising, gaming, streaming, urgent notification, device control, p2p services, internet of things, and etc. The fully distributed network without infrastructure is not only useful for crowded places such as mall, stadium, campus, amusement park etc. but also isolated places not supported by infrastructure. It is also useful for emergency situations such as flooding, earthquake, fire, and etc.
