How great is our salvation? Hebrews 2:5-18

I. Jesus, the “son of man” has restored our inheritance (verses 5-8) 5 For it was not to angels that God subjected the world to come, of which we are speaking.

Hebrews 2:5 “…God subjected the world to come, of which we are speaking.” Hebrews 2:3 “…such a great salvation…” Hebrews 1:14 - Therefore, exercising authority over the world to come (our “great salvation”) is what awaits “those who are to inherit salvation” Hebrews 1:2 - Jesus has been “appointed the heir of all things” Romans 8:17 - we are “heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ” Matthew 5:5 – “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth” Revelation 21:1 & 7 “Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth passed away…He who overcomes will inherit these things”

I. Jesus, the “son of man” has restored our inheritance (verses 5-8) 6 It has been testified somewhere, “What is man, that you are mindful of him, or the son of man, that you care for him? 7 You made him for a little while lower than the angels; you have crowned him with glory and honor, 8 putting everything in subjection under his feet.” Now in putting everything in subjection to him, he left nothing outside his control. At present, we do not yet see everything in subjection to him.

I. Jesus, the “son of man” has restored our inheritance (verses 5-8) “I saw in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man, and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him. And to him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed.” Daniel 7:13-14 “The one who conquers and who keeps my works until the end, to him I will give authority over the nations, and he will rule them with a rod of iron, as when earthen pots are broken in pieces, even as I myself have received authority from my Father.” Revelation 2:26-27 “For it was not to angels that God subjected the world to come, of which we are speaking.” Hebrews 2:5

II. Jesus, the “son of man” has restored our place in the family of God (verses 9-13) 9 But we see him who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. 10 For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering. 11 “So now Jesus and the ones he makes holy have the same Father. That is why Jesus is not ashamed to call them his brothers and sisters.” (New Living Translation)

II. Jesus, the “son of man” has restored our place in the family of God (verses 9-13) 11 “So now Jesus and the ones he makes holy have the same Father. That is why Jesus is not ashamed to call them his brothers and sisters.” (New Living Translation) “For sanctification is glory begun, and glory is sanctification completed.” F.F. Bruce

III. Jesus, the “son of man” has delivered us from Satan’s dominion (verses 14-18) He has delivered us from slavery to the power of death (verses 14-16) 14 Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil,15 and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery. 16 For surely it is not angels that he helps, but he helps the offspring of Abraham.

III. Jesus, the “son of man” has delivered us from Satan’s dominion (verses 14-18) He has delivered us from slavery to the power of death (verses 14-16) He has delivered us from our powerlessness to face temptation (verses 17-18) 17 Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. 18 For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.

III. Jesus, the “son of man” has delivered us from Satan’s dominion (verses 14-18) He has delivered us from slavery to the power of death (verses 14-16) He has delivered us from our powerlessness to face temptation (verses 17-18) “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat, but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.” Peter said to him, “Lord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death.” Jesus said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow this day, until you deny three times that you know me.” Luke 22-31-34

III. Jesus, the “son of man” has delivered us from Satan’s dominion (verses 14-18) He has delivered us from slavery to the power of death (verses 14-16) He has delivered us from our powerlessness to face temptation (verses 17-18) “Who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another? It is before his own master that he stands or falls. And he will be upheld, for the Lord is able to make him stand.” Romans 14:4
