THE LABOUR PARTY

The Labour Party is a centre-left political party in the United Kingdom. It was founded in 1900, and has grown out of the trade union movement and socialist parties of the nineteenth century. It overtook the Liberal Party to become the main opposition to the Conservative Party in the early 1920s, forming minority governments. It is currently the Official Opposition in the Parliament of the United Kingdom, having won the second- largest number of seats in the 2017 general election. WHAT IS IT?

“When Labour wins elections, it is the people and not the powerful who win.” This sentence is a quotation of the leader of the Labour Party Jeremy Corbyn. Throughout his political career, he has always stood up for a country that delivers for the many not the few. Now, Labour is leading a movement based on equality, social justice and compassion to build a Britain we can all be proud of. The Labour Party, founded for and by working people, continues to stand up for working people. During his career, he has worked to stop big businesses and very rich people avoiding tax. He has been an anti- war and anti-nuclear activist. After Labour's defeat in the 2015 general election and the resignation of Ed Miliband, Corbyn announced his candidacy for the leadership of the Labour Party on 6 June 2015. Although many people did not believe he would win, he won enough votes to become the lead candidate. He won many votes from trade unions who supported the Labour Party, as well as left wing activists. He was elected Leader of the Labour Party on 12 September 2015 after winning 59.5% of the votes in the first round of the ballot.

The Labour Party originated in the late 19th century, meeting the demand for a new political party to represent the interests and needs of the urban working class, which had increased in number, and many of whom only gained suffrage with the passage of the Representation of the People Act (1884). It is political organisation built on equality, social justice and compassion, a movement of over half a million members working to elect a government that puts those shared values into action. OUR PROPOSALS FOR A BETTER BRITAIN We will upgrade our economy, breaking down the barriers that hold too many of us back, and tackling the gender pay gap. Our National Transformation Fund will deliver the investment that every part of Britain needs to meet its potential, overcoming years of neglect. We will prioritise jobs and living standards, build a close new relationship with the EU, protect workers’ rights and environmental standards, provide certainty to EU nationals and give a meaningful role to Parliament throughout negotiations. Education is what empowers us all to realise our full potential. Work should provide people with security and fulfilment. Labour will always stand up for working people. Labour created the National Health Service - our proudest achievement, providing universal healthcare for all on the basis of need, free at the point of use. As we change our constitutional relationship with Europe, we must also adjust our own arrangements. OUR PROPOSALS FOR A BETTER BRITAIN
