SAMHSA Definition of Recovery A process of change through which individuals improve their health & wellness, live a self-directed life, & strive to reach their full potential Training Program

SAMHSA’s Recovery Support Strategic Initiative Four Domains Health Home Purpose Community

Four Domains Health-overall wellbeing begins with addressing symptoms of addiction that complicate physical & emotional health. Abstinence from substance use is recommended so that any MH disorders can be addressed & treated. This leads to more informed & healthier choices that will sustain ongoing recovery.

Four Domains Home- having a consistent, peaceful & stable place to return to each day will help remove uncertainty & anxiety that can lead to self-destructive behavior.

Four Domains Purpose - being productive, whether through volunteer work, employment or going to school, provides meaning for every person, especially those who are rebuilding a life in recovery.

Four Domains Community - an essential aspect of recovery from MHD & SUD is understanding that others have experienced similar difficulties & struggles. Having non-judgmental support from friends, family members & others in recovery can be just the thing to help an individual gain momentum in recovery.
