3 Definitions Recovery Alternative Peer Group (APG)
Recovery from alcohol and drug problems is a process of change through which an individual achieves abstinence and improved health, wellness, and quality of life. An Alternative Peer Group is a community-based, family-centered, professionally staffed, positive peer support program that offers prosocial activities, counseling, and case- management for people who struggle with substance use, self-destructive behaviors, or other mental health issues.

Goals of a recovery high school Secondary schools designed specifically for students in recovery from substance use disorder. To educate all available and eligible students who are in recovery from substance use disorder or co- occurring disorders such as anxiety, depression, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder To meet state requirements for awarding a secondary school diploma To support students in working a strong program of recovery

6 S.U.D. and M.H. Integration The same tools are used for both SUD and MH in APGs and Recovery High Schools. Peer support groups - safe place to discuss thoughts, feelings, and behaviors and offer positive feedback from peers Pro-Social activities - promote social skills, bonding with group members, and interact with others who are going through similar issues Clinical components - skill building and guidance to resources outside of APGs and Recovery High Schools Parent support – peer led and skill building groups to educate parents on supporting their young people at home and providing a place for parents share their experiences Continuum of care communication – contact with therapists, psychiatrists, school counselors, probation officers, etc. about what skills they are learning elsewhere

9 Key ingredients for successful adolescent systems of care:
KNOW EACH OTHER! And each other’s programs. (Visit facilities, Meet the staff, Have lunches, Invites to fundraisers, etc.) COMMUNICATION! Frequent (daily, weekly) HUMILITY! We are all on the same team, we just have different “flavors” Speak kindly about other programs, shut down “shit-talking” OPENNESS! Share with each other what works!
