The Concluding Sentence

Definition and Purpose Concluding Sentence Definition and Purpose A concluding sentence is the last sentence in a paragraph. A conclusion can remind the reader of the main points of a paragraph and/or leave the reader with something to think about in relation to the topic.

Summarizing the main points Topic sentence Example A program to encourage people to use public transport in our city is urgently needed. In summary, this program will definitely encourage people to use public transport in our city in order to solve traffic congestion and constant delays. The concluding sentence summarizes the main points of the paragraph.

The Concluding sentence reemphasizes ideas in topic sentence. A Conclusion Topic Sentence When I first found out that I was diagnosed with cancer, I took two important steps to fight the disease. The Concluding sentence reemphasizes ideas in topic sentence. Concluding Sentence Ultimately, because of the steps I took, I was successful in fighting the disease…

Concluding Sentence An important factor in learning a foreign language has to do with the concept of intrinsic versus extrinsic motivation. When we do something for the “fun of it” or because we enjoy it, that is called intrinsic motivation. Extrinsic motivation, on the other hand, is when we do something for the purpose of receiving some kind of external reward such as money, time off from work, etc. Many education experts believe that intrinsic motivation is more powerful when it comes to helping students retain what they’ve learned. The question and challenge for teachers today is, “How can we help our students become intrinsically motivated in what we are teaching?” This concluding sentence tries to leave a final thought with the reader by asking a question.

Concluding Sentence Useful Expressions It is sometimes helpful to have a concluding expression in your last sentence to signal the end of your paragraph. Some common expressions used in concluding sentences are listed below. As we can see, Finally, In summary, Consequently, As a result, These examples show that…

Example of Transition Use A Conclusion Example of Transition Use Finally, because of the huge progress made in communication technologies, our universities should make it a requirement for all students to take advanced courses in these technologies in order to cope with our globalizing world. The transition, finally, is used at the beginning of the conclusion to signal the end of the paragraph.

Recommendation Example These examples show that if you are considering going to school in another country, you should begin learning about the culture, customs, and history of your host nation. A recommendation is used to suggest a solution to a problem.

Activity: write a concluding sentence to the following paragarph There are advantages to driving an old car. For one thing, you will probably worry less about it being damaged or stolen. For another, you will find that many older models are easier for you to repair yourself. A third advantage is that keeping an older car for several years will save you money.

Activity: write a concluding sentence to the following paragarph I have a hard time taking notes in my history class. The instructor talks so fast that I can't keep up with her. She also has a soft voice, and I miss a lot of things she says. She never writes anything on the board like my other instructors do to outline their lectures. She also gets off the subject a lot, so I end up writing down unimportant things. Finally, she talks about everything in the same tones and never emphasizes the important points. When I study my notes, I have trouble separating the important material from the rest.
