F A T P F is for FORMAT What is the form of writing that is expected? Short answer? Paragraph? Essay? Letter?

F A T P A is for AUDIENCE To whom is your writing directed? What do I need to do in my writing to communicate with this audience? What words should I choose? What arguments or ideas would be the most effective?

F A T P T is for TOPIC What is the specific topic you are going to write about? What do I know about this topic? Should I (can I) do research about this topic?

F A T P P is for PURPOSE What is the purpose for your writing? Do I need to persuade or convince my audience about my point of view on the topic? (=Argument writing) Do I need to explain something (the topic) or inform my audience about the topic? (=Expository writing) Do I need to describe or create an experience for the reader? (=Narrative)
