NONRENEWABLE AND RENEWABLE RESOURCES

With your shoulder partner… What do you think nonrenewable resources are? What do you think renewable resources are? Do you have any examples off the top of your head?

RENEWABLE OR NONRENEWABLE Energy resources are limited and are either renewable or nonrenewable Renewable Renewable Nonrenewable Nonrenewable There are advantages and disadvantages to using any energy source The use of any energy resource carries an environmental cost that must be weighed against economic benefit

NONRENEWABLE RESOURCES A nonrenewable resource is a natural resource that cannot be re-made or re-grown at a scale comparable to its consumption.

Fossil fuels include oil, natural gas and coal. NONRENEWABLE RESOURCES are replaced very slowly or not at all---takes millions of years to replace. They include fossil fuels which are relatively cheap and easy to use once they are extracted from the earth---but cause pollution. Fossil fuels include oil, natural gas and coal.

COAL, PETROLEUM, AND GAS Coal, petroleum, and natural gas are considered nonrenewable because they can not be replenished in a short period of time. These are called fossil fuels.

The solid fossil fuel is COAL (made from swamp plants) Burning coal causes the most pollution and releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere which is responsible for global warming. Carbon dioxide (CO2) and other air pollution that is collecting in the atmosphere traps the sun's heat and causing the planet to warm up. Coal-burning power plants are the largest U.S. source of carbon dioxide pollution

The liquid fossil fuel is OIL..Also known as petroleum (made from buried remains of ocean animals and plants) Specific fuels made from oil are gasoline, jet fuel, kerosene, diesel fuel, and fuel oil Automobiles are the second largest source of carbon dioxide pollution in the U.S.

The gas fossil fuel is NATURAL GAS Butane (Made from buried remains of ocean animals and plants) Methane, butane, and propane are made from natural gas Methane

HOW IS COAL MADE ???

HOW ARE OIL AND GAS MADE ???

Nuclear fission uses uranium to create energy. NUCLEAR ENERGY Nuclear fission uses uranium to create energy. Nuclear energy is a nonrenewable resource because once the uranium is used, it is gone!

Nuclear Fission Fission means “to divide” Nuclear fission is the process of splitting a nucleus into two nuclei with smaller masses. Remember that fission has 2 s’s, therefore it splits into TWO parts.

Fission Products The products of nuclear fission reactions are radioactive, but the energy released from these reactions is less harmful to the environment than the use of fossil fuels. The products are intensely radioactive and must be treated and/or stored.

Nuclear Fusion Nuclear fusion is the combining of two nuclei with low masses to form one nucleus of larger mass.

Nuclear Fusion cont. Fusion reactions exist in stars. Our sun is a good example of a fusion reaction. It is almost impossible to create fusion reactions on earth since they need temperatures above one million degrees Celsius in order to take place. Nuclear fusion produces less nuclear waste than nuclear fission and the materials are easier to obtain.

Checkpoint: What was the difference between coal and oil and natural gas?

RENEWABLE RESOURCES Renewable resources are natural resources that can be replenished in a short period of time. ● Solar ● Geothermal ● Wind ● Biomass ● Water

Why is energy from the sun renewable? SOLAR Energy from the sun. Why is energy from the sun renewable?

Energy from Earth’s heat. GEOTHERMAL Energy from Earth’s heat.

WIND creating electricity using the wind Why is energy from the wind renewable?

BIOMASS Energy from burning organic or living matter. Why is energy from biomass renewable?

WATER (HYDROELECTRIC) Energy from the flow of water.
