Presentation transcript:

Artificial Intelligence Is it ethical to give robots consciousness?

Do Now: What does it mean to be conscious? (How can you determine consciousness?)

Definition of Consciousness Neurobiological Definition Awareness of oneself (or one's own cognitive experience) and the environment with an emphasis on two major components: alertness and awareness, which can be evaluated separately (although they are strongly interconnected) Psychological Definition Awareness or perception of an inward psychological or spiritual fact: intuitively perceived knowledge of something in one's inner self Spiritual Definition Higher consciousness is the consciousness of a higher self where it is"the part of the human being that is capable of transcending animal instincts".

According to Stanford University Perhaps no aspect of mind is more familiar or more puzzling than consciousness and our conscious experience of self and world. The problem of consciousness is arguably the central issue in current theorizing about the mind. Despite the lack of any agreed upon theory of consciousness, there is a widespread, if less than universal, consensus that an adequate account of mind requires a clear understanding of it and its place in nature. We need to understand both what consciousness is and how it relates to other, nonconscious, aspects of reality.

Major Goals of AI To understand and identify intelligence in order to model and replicate it, and to build systems that exhibit intelligent behavior.

Should people serve as a model? Some believe that AI should not only replicate humans and human behavior, but should serve as “better versions” of humans themselves. Some futurists and technologists believe that humans and their decisions making abilities are flawed and inconsistent, and AI and machine learning could address those discrepancies.

Why could tech giants be so divided on this issue? Bill Gates on dangers of artificial intelligence: ‘I don’t understand why some people are not concerned’ AI is likely to destroy humans, Elon Musk warns. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg: Elon Musk's doomsday AI predictions are 'pretty irresponsible' Google leads in the race to dominate artificial intelligence

Recent Developments 2009: Google starts developing, in secret, a driverless car. In 2014, it became the first to pass, in Nevada, a U.S. state self-driving test. 2009: Computer scientists at the Intelligent Information Laboratory at Northwestern University develop Stats Monkey, a program that writes sport news stories without human intervention. 2011: A convolutional neural network wins the German Traffic Sign Recognition competition with 99.46% accuracy (vs. humans at 99.22%). 2011: Watson, a natural language question answering computer, competes on Jeopardy! and defeats two former champions.

Questions to consider: How should consciousness be defined? Who should be responsible for defining this term? Should AI development be regulated? Who should regulate this technology? Would providing consciousness to AI be effective? Why/ why not?
