Peptic Ulcer

Depending on the location, there are different types of ulcers: Gastric ulcer: peptic ulcer that occurs in the stomach Duodenal ulcer: occurs in the first part of the small intestine (duodenum) Esophageal ulcer: usually occurs in the lower part of the esophagus

Once believed to have been caused by lifestyle (diet, stress, etc.)

Actually caused by a bacteria H. pylori Bacteria lives and reproduces in the mucus layer that covers and protects the tissue that lines the stomach and intestine Causes inflammation of the lining and can lead to an ulcer

Number one symptom? Pain

Diagnosis Endoscopy: a long narrow tube attached to a camera is sent down the esophagus https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SWMWsOXlBwE

Treatment Antibiotics Antacids: neutralize stomach acid H-2 Blocker (histamine blocker—histamine encourages HCl acid secrection) Proton Pump Inhibitors: stop the production of acid
