Skirts!

Sewing is one of the oldest arts, dating all of the way back to the Stone Age. As long as people have been sewing, they have been making clothes. Although hand sewing is still very popular, the invention of the sewing machine has meant that most clothing today is mass produced.

Disassemble an existing product Buy a commercial pattern There are many different sewing methods used to create clothing, from the construction of the clothing to the embellishment used to decorate it. Most clothing is created using a pattern. A pattern can be quite simple, anything from calculating the measurements of the wearer to producing complex pattern pieces. A standard pattern is a paper outline of each piece of the clothing which will be sewn together. Patterns will have instructions such as seam allowance lines and which order they need to be sewn together. The skirt is a very versatile item of clothing The skirt is a very versatile item of clothing. In the western world, skirts are usually considered as women’s clothing, but around the world there are many exceptions to this. Skirts vary in many different shapes and sizes, from the 1960s mini skirt, to a 19th century crinoline. The shortness of a skirt, to the amount of material it contains can be influenced by fashion, personal taste and cultural contexts such as modesty. Skirts are still extremely popular in today’s fashions with a great variety of styles available. Can you name the different varieties of skirts and match them to the country they came from?
