1 Pattern Cutting Making A Toile
Part 2! Tutor: Kate Phipps

2 Once you have completed this you need to begin making a toilé…..
This week we are going to continue drawing out our own garment patterns. Remember to add seam allowances to your pattern once you have finished drawing it out. Once you have completed this you need to begin making a toilé….. But what is a toilé?

3 A toilé….

4 A "toile" is a version of a garment made by a fashion designer or dressmaker to test a pattern. They are usually made in cheap material, as multiple toile’s may be made in the process of perfecting a design. By altering a toile, it allows you to achieve a perfectly fitting garment.

5 Pattern Grading Grading a pattern is a method of changing the size of a pattern up or down, whilst still maintaining the correct proportions of the original pattern. For example, if you wanted to increase a size 12 pattern to a size 16, you would look at the main measurements required for a size 16 (such as bust, waist, full length). You would then increase your original pattern until it met these measurements. To do this you would use the ‘cut and spread’ method.

6 You must produce a completed item by the final week!
Final Project Ideas!!! Make a finished garment from the pattern you are currently making yourself – why not adapt it? Add sleeves, add a pocket, add decorative finishes such as appliqué, fabric manipulation etc. Use a commercial sewing pattern to successfully create a finished garment. Make a gift for a friend or family member, such as a tote bag or an item of children’s clothing. Use a tutorial from a book or a website to create a garment. You will begin working on your final project next week! You must let me know next week what you are going to be working on. You must produce a completed item by the final week!

7 Project Ideas… Make a dress?
Such as this shirred summer dress. You will need approx. 2 metres of fabric to make one of these. You could alter the length or add straps to it.

8 Project Ideas… Make a circle skirt?
This is a nice and easy project. A simple skirt with a zip fastening. You will need approx. 1.5 – 2 metres of fabric to make one of these. You could make it more complex by adding pockets to it.

9 Project Ideas… Make a summer top?
A lovely summer halter top for your holidays! You will need approx. 1.5 metres of fabric to make one of these.
