Native and Colonial Caribbean Christopher Columbus reached in 1492 and called the natives: “Indians” Native people are called Taino (Ty-no) Sugar plantations everywhere!! Natives used as slaves and African slaves used as replacements Spanish, French, British, Dutch and Danish all claimed islands by the 19th Century He thought he was in the East Indies Spanish set up sugar plantations

Independence Slave revolt in Haiti in late 1700’s Haiti independent from France by 1804 Cuba freed from Spain in 1898 Jamaica, Trinidad, and Tobago freed from Great Britain in 1962

Culture in the Caribbean Many people are of mixed ancestry since so many cultures reside here African roots are strong Religions include Catholic and Protestant Some areas practice Santeria and voodoo Most islands speak Spanish However, Haiti has many French speakers and Jamaica speaks English Santeria combines African religions with Christianity. Uses trances, music, and animal sacrifices to communicate with their deity.

Economy As part of colonialism, many people are poor Sugar trade declined due to competition Export crops: sugar, bananas, citrus fruits, coffee and spices Pay is very low

Popular culture Music: Calypso: Steel drums and guitars with improvised lyrics Reggae: Deals with social problems and religion. Example: Bob Marley Tourism: Jobs in hotels, resorts, & restaurants Working as guides and assistants informal jobs such as street vendors
