POLYMER PRESENTED BY NINGTHOUJAM ROJER SINGH

CONTENT: 1.INTRODUCTION 2.CLASSIFICATION OF POLYMER 3.TYPES OF POLYMERIZATION 4.CHARACTERISTICS OF POLYMERS 5.APPLICATION OF POLYMERS

INTRODUCTION The word “POLYMER” is a combination of two Greek words, “POLY” means many and “MEROS” means part of unit A polymer is a molecule of which is formed by repeated linking of monomers n(-CH 2 CH 2 -) (- CH 2 CH 2 -) n ETHYLENE POLYETHYLENE

CLASSIFICATION OF POLYMER CLASSIFICATION BASED ON SOURCE CLASSIFICATION BASED ON STRUCTURE CLASSIFICATION BASED ONPOLYMERIZATION CLASSIFICATION BASED ON MOLECULAR FORCE

CLASSIFICATION BASED ON SOURCE 1.NATURAL POLYMER- POLYMER WHICH OCCUR IN NATURE MOSTLY IN PLANTS AND ANIMAL. Eg starch, cellulose etc. 2.SYNTHETIC POLYMER-Polymer which are prepared in the laboratory.eg PVC,nylon, etc

CLASSIFICATION BASED ON STRUCTURE LINEAR CHAIN POLYMER-Monomer units are linked to one another to form long polymer chain. Eg nylon, PVC. Etc BRANCHED CHAIN POLYMERS- Mononer units are linked to form long chain which have branch chain attached to them. Eg glycogen, starch etc CROSS LINKED POLYMER-Monomer units are linked together to form 3-D structure. Eg melamine, bakelite, etc

CLASSIFICATION BASED ON SYNTHESIS ADDITION POLYMERS-When monomer units are repeatedly added to form long chain without elimination any byproduct molecules n(-CH 2 CH 2 - ) polymerisation (- CH 2 CH 2 -) n CONDENSATION POLYMERS- When monomers with two or more bifunctional groups react together with the elimination of simple molecules like water, alcohol etc. Eg nylon 66,ctc

Classification base on molecular force ELASTOMER- Intermolecular forces are weak. Eg natural rubber, etc FIBERS-Polymers which are threat like and can be woven to fibrics. Eg terylene, etc THERMOPLASTICS-Upon heating they soften readily and can regain their shape upon cooling. Eg polyethene, etc THERMOSETTING PLASTIC-Upon heating they do not soften. Once melted they can not be remoulded. Eg bakelite, etc

CHARACTERISTICS OF POLYMERS Low density Good corrosion resistance Economical Poor tensile strenght Poor temperature resistance Low mechanical properties Can be produced transparent or in different colours

APPLICATION OF POLYMERS Medicine- polyurethane and teflon are used in making heart valve and blood vessels Industry-polymer are used in making automobile part, fighter planes, pipes, tanks, etc SPORTS-Playground equipments, swimming pools, various balls and helmets are produced from polymers.
