Do now What is tone? How do authors establish the tone of an essay?

Identifying tone Review the list of tone words provided. Select one that is appropriate for one of the essays you read. Share your thoughts with a partner.

Finding evidence in the text Once you have selected the tone word that is appropriate for your essay, select 2 quotes from the text that help to show how the author is establishing the tone by using descriptive details. Share your quotes and explain to the class.

Quick Write Explain your thoughts in writing. Write 1-paragraph explaining the tone of one of the essays you read. Include two examples from the text that show how the author uses descriptive details to establish the tone.
