Presentation transcript:

How does the moon move? Like earth, the moon moves in two ways 1. Rotates on its own axis every 27.3 days 2. Revolves around Earth about once every 27.3 days. Ex: (personal experience, new question, did it answer a warm-up question? Answer warm-up question?) Why does a moon day equal a moon year? Look at the numbers!

What causes the face of the moon to light up? The moon reflects light from the sun.

What is a phase of the Moon? A phase is a different shape of the moon as seen from Earth. Whole set of phases = complete revolution around Earth. Ex: (personal experience, new question, did it answer a warm-up question?) Answer warm-up question?) Why do we see only parts of the moon’s lit side?

What causes phases of the moon? The phase of moon you see depends on how much of the sunlit side of the moon faces Earth. Ex: (personal experience, new question, did it answer a warm-up question? Answer warm-up question?)

What do you see when the moon is “New?” “The Moon's unlit side is facing the Earth.

Last one happened on August 12 What is a “Blue” moon? A blue moon can refer to the third full moon in a season with four full moons. Most years have twelve full moons that occur approximately monthly. Extra days accumulate, so every two or three years there is an extra full moon. A "blue moon" is also used colloquially to mean "a rare event", reflected in the phrase "once in a blue moon". Last one happened on August 12

Is there a dark side of the moon? “…forces between Earth and the Moon have slowed the moon's rotation so that the same side is always facing the Earth. The other face, which is never visible from the Earth in its entirety …is therefore called the "far side of the Moon". Not to be confused with the "dark side" (the hemisphere that is not illuminated by the Sun at a given point in time), as the two are the same only during a full moon. Both the near and far sides receive (on average) almost equal amounts of light from the Sun. However, the term "dark side of the moon" is used commonly to refer to the far side.” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Far_side_of_the_Moon)
