1 Good Morning! To warm you up a bit after a nice break, let’s review the following (write answers in notebooks) How long does it take for the Earth to orbit or revolve around the Sun? What does the rotation of the Earth cause? True or False: The Moon and Sun revolve around Earth. What about the Earth gives us different seasons?

2 Focus ?: Does the moon change its size and shape throughout the month?
Moon Phases Focus ?: Does the moon change its size and shape throughout the month?

3 Objectives SWBAT label the phases of the moon.
SWBAT explain why we see the different phases of the moon.

4 If we look at the moon on different days during the month, this is what we might see…

5 Stop and Jot! Think about what you have learned about the location and movements of the sun, Earth, and moon. What do you think might cause us to see the phases of the moon?

6 The moon is found closer to the Earth than the Earth is to the Sun.
The Moon revolves around the Earth and also rotates on its own axis. The moon revolves around Earth about once every 27.3 days. It also rotates on its own axis about once every 27.3 days. The same side of the moon always faces Earth.

7 The moon does not make its own light.
The sun lights up different portions of the moon as it rotates. QUICK CHECK! What causes the phases of the moon? Does the Moon create its own light?

8 What Is a Moon Phase? Moon Phases - Shapes created by the changing amounts of the visible lit areas of the moon.

9 New Moon The first phase of the lunar cycle. During this phase, the Moon is between the Earth and the Sun. Because its lighted side is facing away from Earth, the Moon appears dark.

10 Waxing Crescent Moon The waxing crescent phase appears after the new Moon phase. As the moon continues in its orbit, more of the lighted area becomes visible. During this time, the Moon is described as waxing, or growing.

11 . The third Moon phase. Occurs when half of the moon is visible.
First Quarter Moon . The third Moon phase. Occurs when half of the moon is visible.

12 Waxing Gibbous Fourth Moon phase. Moon is still growing so most, but not all, of the Moon is visible.

13 Full Moon Fifth moon phase. During this phases, the entire lighted side of the Moon is visible from Earth. At this point, the Earth is between the moon and the Sun.

14 Waning Gibbous Sixth Moon phase. Begins right after the full Moon Phase. After the full Moon phase, the area of the lighted side that is visible from Earth begins to wane, or get smaller.

15 Seventh Moon Phase. May also be called last quarter moon.
Third Quarter Moon Seventh Moon Phase. May also be called last quarter moon.

16 Final Moon Phase before Moon completes its revolution around Earth.
Waning Crescent Final Moon Phase before Moon completes its revolution around Earth.

17

18 Guided Practice Name that phase!
Then, draw it in the correct spot on your worksheet! 1. New Moon:

19 2. Waxing Crescent Moon

20 3 First Quarter Moon

21 Waxing Gibbous Moon

22 Full Moon

23 Waning Gibbous Moon

24 Last Quarter Moon

25 Waning Crescent Moon

26 Why Does The Moon Have Phases?
As the moon revolves, different amounts of its lighted side are visible from Earth. Note: It takes about 29 days for a complete cycle of the phases of the Moon.

27 So what are the positions of the S, E and M?
For a Full Moon? For a New Moon?
