Key Question: What is a simple machine? Simple Machines Key Question: What is a simple machine?

What is a machine? -A device that uses a mechanical system to accomplish a task What is a Mechanical System? A series of interrelated, moving parts that work together to accomplish a simple task

What is the difference between a simple machine and a complex machine? Simple machine – a machine with few or no moving parts. Simple machines make work easier. Compound machine- two or more simple machines used together to accomplish a task. Complex machine – combination of one or more simple machines and a power source. What is an example of a power source?

Examples of

Why are machines useful? Because they provide a mechanical advantage. Mechanical advantage is the ratio of the output force to the input force. What does this mean? MA=Fo/Fi

Mechanical Advantage Having a mechanical advantage decreases the effort but increases the distance. The amount of work stays the same, its just easier.

What would we call a person who designs machine’s for a living? An engineer uses scientific knowledge to create or improve inventions that solve problems

Engineering Cycle 1.Evaluate 2.Design 3.Prototype 4.Test
