ACT 1 SCENE 2 Responses 1. In this scene, Lord Capulet talks to Paris about marrying his daughter Juliet. What two reasons does he give for not wanting Juliet to marry at this time? Do you think these are good reasons? Why or Why not? 2. Why do you think Lord Capulet differs in his opinion of Juliet getting married than Lady Capulet? 3. Why do you think the nurse was a bit relieved that Juliet had not thought about marriage yet? 4. In Shakespeare’s time, many teenagers were married and having children by the age of 15. Why do you think this has changed? But, then again there are still teenagers that marry at age 18. Why do you think this is? 5. Why does Shakespeare stress love based on looks so far? Think about Romeo’s “love” for Rosaline and also how Benvolio talks about “looking for other beauties”. Additionally, the nurse and Lady Capulet comment that Paris is a “man of wax” and that Verona has not seen such a fair gentleman before. Juliet also comments that she will “look to like”.
