FAMILY, CAREER AND COMMUNITY LEADERS OF AMERICA Define terms related to Family, Career and Community Leaders of America. Name reasons for belonging to FCCLA. State membership requirements for FCCLA. (FCCLA) FCCLA is a nonprofit national career and technical student organization for young men and women in family and consumer sciences education in public and private school through grade 12. http://www.fcclainc.org/ Click here to access the national website

Program Emphasis Is the only in-school student organization with the family as its central focus Is a career and technical student organization that functions as an integral part of the family and consumer sciences education curriculum and operates within the school system Provides opportunities for active student participation at local, state and national levels FCCLA is an integral part of the family and consumer sciences education program. In the local school, this means chapter projects and activities stem from and enhance family and consumer sciences programs of study. FCCLA chapters give students expanded opportunities for knowledge application, leadership training, community involvement and personal growth. Many of these experiences occur during class time, while others may occur out of class.

Join FCCLA The Ultimate Leadership Experience Join FCCLA The Ultimate Leadership Experience! Family, Career and Community Leaders of America is a dynamic and effective national student organization that helps youth become strong leaders and address important personal, family, work and societal issues through Family and Consumer Sciences education. Be part of the Ultimate Leadership Experience which offers opportunities for students in public and private middle schools, and high schools, to make new friends; plan and participate in chapter activities; turn interest and concerns into action and earn recognition. With nearly 7,000 chapters and over 202,000 members in the United States, District of Columbia, Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico, you can be part of the only career and technical student organization to have the family as its central focus! Students must be enrolled or must have been enrolled in a Family and Consumer Sciences class for at least one semester.

The History of FCCLA February, 1917 – Smith Hughes Act signed supporting vocational education June, 1945 – Future Homemakers of America founded in Chicago, IL February, 1946 – Oklahoma becomes the 18th state association of the Future Homemakers of America July, 1965 – Future Homemakers of America and New Homemakers of America merged May, 1971 – HERO Chapters were established July, 1999 – Future Homemakers of America changed their name to Family, Career and Community Leaders of America

FCCLA PURPOSES To provide opportunities for personal development and preparation for adult life. To strengthen the function of the family as a basic unit of society. To encourage democracy through cooperative action in the home and community. To encourage individual and group involvement in helping achieve global cooperation and harmony.

FACTS – Families Acting for Community Traffic Safety, is a national FCCLA peer education program through which young people strive to save lives advocating sober driving, seat belt use, and safe driving habits.

                                 Career Connection is a national FCCLA program that guides young people to link their options and skills for success in careers, families, and communities. Through individual, cooperative, and competitive activities, members: discover their strengths; target career goals; initiate a plan for achieving the lifestyle they desire

Families First is a national FCCLA peer education program through which young people gain a better understanding of how families work and learn skills to become strong family members. It’s goals are to: Help young people become strong family members and leaders for today and tomorrow Strengthen the family as the basic unit of society

Here’s an opportunity to live in Japan next summer with a Japanese host family. You can be one of 14 FCCLA members selected to experience a Japanese tea ceremony, traditional Japanese foods, or climb up Mount Fuji with a Japanese brother or sister. This is a summer you will never forget! FCCLA provides scholarship opportunities for 5 to 6 week summer programs funded by the Kikkoman Corporation. The 2006 program will award 14 FCCLA members full scholarships worth over $4,000 each. These scholarships are available only to FCCLA members in their sophomore or junior year of high school.

STOP the Violence-Students Taking on Prevention is a peer-to-peer outreach initiative that empowers young people to recognize, report, and reduce the potential for youth violence. GOALS: Empower students Engage young people in efforts Use peer education to increase youth awareness Reduce the potential for youth violence in schools                                                          

                                         The FCCLA Leadership Service in Action Program guides students to develop, plan, carry out, and evaluate projects that improve the quality of life in their communities. Through their projects, members experience character development and improve their critical and creative thinking, interpersonal communication, practical knowledge, and career preparation.

Financial Fitness is a national FCCLA peer education program that involves youth teaching other young people how to make, save, and spend money wisely. Through FCCLA's Financial Fitness program, young people plan and carry out projects that help them and their peers learn to become wise financial managers and smart consumers.

Student Body is a national FCCLA peer education program that helps young people learn to eat right, be fit, and make healthy choices. Its goals are to: Help young people make informed, responsible decisions about their health Provide youth opportunities to teach others and develop healthy lifestyles, as well as communication and leadership skills

Power of One helps students find and use their personal power Power of One helps students find and use their personal power. Members set their own goals, work to achieve them, and enjoy the results. The skills members learn in Power of One help them now and in the future in school, with friends and family, in their future at college, and on the job.

                    STAR Events (Students Taking Action with Recognition) are competitive events in which members are recognized for proficiency and achievement in chapter and individual projects, leadership skills, and occupational preparation. STAR Events offer individual skill development and application of learning through the following activities: cooperative – teams work to accomplish specific goals; individualized – an individual member works alone to accomplish specific goals; and competitive – individual or team performance measured by an established set of criteria;

FCCLA Community Service Opportunities

2014-15 National Outreach Project “Share Our Strength” More than 16 million kids in America struggle with hunger.  That’s a number that can’t be ignored but is often overlooked.  Most people find it hard to believe that anyone in the U.S. could be going hungry.  We are the world’s wealthiest nation after all. But it is an undeniable fact.  So Share Our Strength created the No Kid Hungry campaign to end childhood hunger in America.  Through No Kid Hungry, kids are getting access to the food they need to live, learn and play.

Parliamentary Procedure Provides a basic set of rules for conducting a meeting in an organized and efficient manner Provides techniques for solving problems. Gives every member equal rights. Allows introduction and discussion of only one item of business at a time. Roberts Rules of Order, Newly Revised is the accepted reference.

FCCLA Five Step Planning Process is the chapter management tool that helps members select and carry out projects to fit their needs and concerns. It is also a great tool for advisers too! Use it to identify steps to starting a new project!
