Lesson 30 Quality Control – I

Chapter Learning Objectives This lecture deals with; Quality Aspects of Quality Quality Control Aspects of Quality Control Total Quality Control/Management

Quality Quality is Conformance to Given Requirement or Specifications on a Product or Service. The term quality by itself does not necessarily mean high quality. It means uniformity, consistency and conformity to what user wants.

Two Aspects of Quality 1. Design Quality Design Quality Covers (materials, form, appearance, functions ) When Reference is made to “high cost of quality” such Reference is Almost Associated with Design Quality.

2. Manufactured Quality Manufacturing is the transformation of raw materials into finished goods for sale, or intermediate processes involving the production or finishing of semi-manufactures. It is a large branch of industry and of secondary production. Some industries, like semiconductor and steel manufacturers use the term fabrication. After Designing Product has been placed to Manufacture. Defects in Material, Parts, and Subassemblies May Arise. Poor Quality is the Result of Poorly Controlled Manufacturing Process.

Quality Control Quality control, or QC for short, is a process by which entities review the quality of all factors involved in production.

Quality Control….. Quality Control is a set of measures taken to ensure that defective products or services are not produced, and that the design meets performance requirements.

Quality Control…. This approach places an emphasis on three aspects: Elements such as controls, job management, defined and well managed processes, performance and integrity criteria, and identification of records Competence, such as knowledge, skills, experience, and qualifications Soft elements, such as personnel integrity, confidence, organizational culture, motivation, team spirit, and quality relationships.

Control Controls include product inspection, where every product is examined visually, and often using a stereo microscope for fine detail before the product is sold into the external market. Inspectors will be provided with lists and descriptions of unacceptable product defects such as cracks or surface blemishes for example.

Total Quality Control/Management "Total quality control", also called total quality management, is an approach that extends beyond ordinary statistical quality control techniques and quality improvement methods. It implies a complete overview and re-evaluation of the specification of a product, rather than just considering a more limited set of changeable features within an existing product.

Statistical Quality/Process Control Process of Application of Statistical Principles and Techniques in Stages of Design, production, maintenance and Service. Statistical Process Control or SPC is a method for achieving quality control in manufacturing processes.

Statistical Quality/Process Control….. SPC relies on measuring variation in manufacturing output and setting control limits based on observations of variations arising solely from common causes. A process that is "in control" is expected to generate output that is within the control limits.

Aspects of Quality Control Two Important Aspects of Quality Control; Control of Quality. Improvement in Quality.

Control of Quality Can Be Achieved Control of Manufacturing Information. Control of Purchases & Storage of Raw Materials. Control of Manufacturing Process. Control of Finished Products. Control of Measuring Instruments and Test Equipments. Control of Corrective Action
