Subjects & Predicates Sentences consist of 2 basic parts: subjects and predicates.

The Subject The subject tells whom or what the sentence is about. To find the subject, simply ask yourself who or what is doing something or about whom is something being said. The subject may come at the beginning, middle, or end of a sentence.

The Subject Examples: My best friend sits next to me in science. [Who sits? My best friend sits.] Science class is very interesting this year. [What is interesting? Science class is.]

The Predicate The predicate of a sentence tells something about the subject. The predicate usually comes after the subject. Sometimes, however, part or all of the predicate comes before the subject.

The Predicate Examples: Lois Lenski wrote Strawberry Girl. Many people would like to have a robot. The tooth with a point is called a canine.
