Galaxies
Galaxies What are they? Large group of stars, gas, and dust held together by gravity Separated by huge distances Stars are grouped together in galaxies; galaxies are grouped together in clusters Our Sun is one star among many in a galaxy
Types of Galaxies Elliptical There are 3 types… Contain little gas and dust, bright in the center Shaped as large 3-Dimensional ellipses
Types of Galaxies Spiral Has spiral arms Made of gas and dust Most common type of galaxy
Types of Galaxies Irregular Includes the other galaxies that do not fit into the other classifications Has many different shapes and sizes
The Milky Way Our galaxy contains about 200 billion stars, including the Sun About 100,000 light years across The Sun is located about 30,000 light years from the center, along the edge 100,000 light years
The Milky Way All stars orbit in a central region Classified as normal spiral galaxy… might be a barred spiral… since we can’t see it from the outside, we are not sure
