1. What is a Galaxy
A. A galaxy is a large group of stars, dust, gas and dark matter held together by gravity
The largest galaxies contain more than a trillion stars while smaller ones only have a few million.

B. We live in the Milky Way Galaxy.

A. Spiral
1. Spiral galaxies have a bulge in the center and very
noticeable spiral arms.
2. HOT, YOUNG, BLUE stars are in the spiral arms
OLD, COOLER stars are in the bulge, the center region
3. Most (77%) galaxies are spiral.

1. Elliptical galaxies are oval shaped.
2. Elliptical galaxies contain mostly older stars with very little dust and gas
