1 Cornell Note-Taking Method

2 What are galaxies made of?
TIME’S UP! START TIMER TIME LIMIT: 5 minutes 1/22/19 Homework: Complete Art Galaxy; Instructions are on the School Website Review Notes POD #1: What are galaxies made of?

3 TIME’S UP! START TIMER TIME LIMIT: 5 minutes 1/24/19 Homework: Review Notes POD #2: If you traveled through the universe, which TYPE of galaxy would you see the most of?

4 Three Types of Galaxies? What is the Milky Way?
ENTRY 30: GALAXY NOTES KEY POINTS: What is a Galaxy? Three Types of Galaxies? What is the Milky Way? What is Gravity’s Role?

5 Solar system < Galaxy < Universe
1. What is a Galaxy A. A galaxy is a large group of stars, dust, gas and dark matter held together by gravity The largest galaxies contain more than a trillion stars while smaller ones only have a few million. Solar system < Galaxy < Universe B. We live in the Milky Way Galaxy.

6 2. Three Types of Galaxies?
A. Spiral 1. Spiral galaxies have a bulge in the center and very noticeable spiral arms. 2. HOT, YOUNG, BLUE stars are in the spiral arms OLD, COOLER stars are in the bulge, the center region 3. Most (77%) galaxies are spiral.

7 2. Three Types of Galaxies?
B. Elliptical 1. Elliptical galaxies are oval shaped. 2. Elliptical galaxies contain mostly older stars with very little dust and gas 3. The largest galaxies are elliptical galaxies

8 2. Three Types of Galaxies?
Shapeless 2. Three Types of Galaxies? C. Irregular Galaxy 1. Shapeless and cannot be classified as spiral or elliptical 2. Little to NO symmetry or structure 3. FEW (3%) galaxies are irregular galaxies

9 A typical barred spiral galaxy
3. What is the Milky Way? A typical barred spiral galaxy We live in the Orion arm of the Milky Way

10

11 4. What is Gravity’s Role? A. Gravity exerts a huge pull on stars, dust and dark matter B. Gravity pulls stars together to form galaxies and pulls galaxies together to form the universe.

12 THIS IS YOUR THIRD ASSIGNMENT:
ASSIGNMENT 3: Written Assignment (MUST BE 7-10 SENTENCES) THIS IS YOUR THIRD ASSIGNMENT: Write 7-10 sentences (2 paragraphs) about the relationships between the solar system, the Milky Way, and the universe. How is the solar system, the Milky Way and the Universe related? Tell me what you know about these three? What is the difference between the three? Put your thoughts on paper!
